Tepper may be frontrunner, but not so fast!

What's ridiculous about it is that Tepper has shown no inclination to move the team.  Just the opposite.  Rapoport reported yesterday he's committed to it staying in Charlotte.

And it's pretty hard to reconcile Rubin suddenly being favored when Breer said long ago Richardson didn't want to sell to him.  That plus no mention of Kestenbaum and no other source mentioning anything like this makes all this look questionable to me.

Oh, I have no problem with anyone questioning the believability of a Post article, but what I will say is that I don't know exactly why the relocation fee has become a "thing" as it pertains to Tepper, but it's probably because some folks don't quite trust him. I assume that the issue reared its head for some reason and was not media-driven considering that Richardson (hence the NFL) would go to the extent of having an effective penalty clause in the contract. I mean, I hear what Tepper is saying, but it still leaves a slightly bad aftertaste in my mouth. Rich fugers will say and do anything to get in the door, and he's the richest and the biggest shark of the bunch.

The relocation thing is nothing more than a way to bloat the reported selling price.  It isn't being included because anyone thinks Tepper has any inclination to move the team.  In fact, Tepper has said he wants to keep the team in Charlotte.  So really, what has Rubin said or done to give his claim any more credibility than Tepper's?  To answer my own question, nothing.  He made a claim, just like Tepper has.

I'm with Scot here, this sounds like a planted Rubin spin article that ignores many important pieces to the sale.

You're probably correct, but I do believe that the relocation fee is meant to be a deterrent (inasmuch as there can realistically be one). I mean, wouldn't it only come into play if he actually moves the team?

The narrative on the relocation fee is that it's something the NFL is using to artificially inflated value of the purchase.

Tepper has shown no inclination toward moving the team, but by throwing this in the NFL can make it look like the team sold for a few hundred million higher than it actually did.

To be honest, I think the relocation fee will be there for anyone if the actual purchase price is less than the 2.5 billion everyone wanted.

I really hope Rubin can come from behind and steal this thing. He’s been my pick from the start

Hate to tell you, but all indications are probably not.

For what it's worth, I'm not getting my first choice either. I wouldn't say I'm unhappy with Tepper though.

That makes NO sense.

The relocation fee was first mentioned by LaCanfora when he reported Tepper was zeroing in on the sale.

In the end, the NFL may be able to trumpet that the sale price of the Panthers was in the $2.4B-$2.5B range, one well-placed source theorized, by including a clause in the sale price that Tepper would have to pay an additional $200-$300M should he move the team within a certain time frame, or something along those lines.

So Tepper doesn't actually have to pay the fee, but the NFL can include it in the accounting to make it look like the sale was more profitable than it actually was for PR reasons and to help raise the value of future sales.

It goes along with the report that the NFL is disappointed in the sale price.
