La Canfora: Signs point to Tepper being named new owner early next week, $2.1-2.2 billion sale

They are if/when Tepper demands a domed stadium. Our Republican state government will balk at that request for money, and they'll be someone else's Panthers soon after. Tepper isn't buying this team to keep them in Charlotte and make them successful. He's buying them as an asset he can leverage to make more money and then sell once the time is right. Markets be damned.

Seattle is the 14th biggest media market. Oklahoma City is the 41st media market.  Didn't stop Clay Bennett from buying the Sonics and moving them to OKC once he didn't get his shiny new stadium (which he really didn't want, since he just wanted them out of Seattle).

Playing the media market card is nice and I wish it had more validity, but in this good 'ole boys club that is the NFL, it doesn't mean all that much anymore. The type of people who fixate on the next new, shiny, money-making object are the same kind of people who play with fake boobs and have brass balls in their offices.

The OKC situation is very unique. The Hornets played up there during the Katrina recovery and the fan reaction/attendance in the area proved to everyone that OKC could support its own team. That situation hasn't happened for an NFL team. The two LA teams won't work as far as fan base revenue, but they're not doing it for the fans. They're doing it for the corporate clients and partnerships that it will definitely bring in. They're greedy, not stupid.

lol yea...this article is also just speculating like everyone else.

"People close to him say he's out, but signs point to Tepper winning the bid. He has money. Also, it could be coming to an end soon."

Wow, no poo!

What's he looking at?  His magic 8-ball?

I think that is on top of the standard league relocation fee (which is about $500 million).  Basically, it's just an accounting tool to inflate the perceived purchase price of the team.  It is like the final year of a players salary...it's just there to look pretty, but everybody knows it's nothing but fluff.

But I do think it is indicative of the fact that the league DOES NOT want the team to move.  There is simply too much profit to lose by moving the team.

financing issues...OK

but league pressure...no way...JR would tell them where they can stick it

According to Gantt, he was telling them to stick it, which might explain Tepper's reported frustration.

No doubt the league does not want the team to move.

That said, I don't believe they're above using it as a threat to get a new stadium.

Look, man. I'm not arguing that the city will do all it can to keep the team here. It will. But city funding will not cover the cost.

The state government will have to be approached with how building a new stadium is a short-term investment for a long-term payoff that brings all sorts of hotel and tourism dollars to the state. And I don't think they'll be sold on that.

The Rams left St. Louis because St. Louis wasn't willing (or able) to play, not because Jefferson City wasn't.

Of course, it's really the only leverage the league has to try and get public funding.  With that said, I do expect a new stadium in about 8-10 years or so.  I'd also expect a three way split on the funding between the league, Tepper, and the city/state.

Jerry bending over for the league one last time. Maybe he'll get a pair of tattoos on his face, the Shield on one side and the Rooney signature on the other.

Your legacy is that of a Yes Man Jerry.

The promise of a superbowl with a domed stadium might do it.  might.

If you're selling something and  one guys says, "I'll pay you a hundred bucks but I have to go borrow fifty" and another says "I'll pay you seventy-five and I've got it in my pocket right now", who do you sell to?

And let's be real: Tepper having the league's favor was a tough thing to overcome.

I get that part but my intuition is telling me there is more to this than the money. It is about keeping it within and making sure Tepper is the one who owns it as you stated.

Financially, once escrow closes, the money will all be transferred. All 2.5 billion. Doesnt matter if it's 1 billion from Navarro and the other 1.5 from 20 minority investors. In the end it will all be collected. It doesn't make sense to me for the NFL to accept 200-300 million less than what is offered unless they flat out just want Tepper.

And as for Navarros finances, i do not believe for one bit that he doesnt have the finances or that any of the proposed minority shareholders could perform financially.

YESSS!!!!! MORE OF THE SAME!!!!!!

“Tepper has a pair of brass testicles. Cartoonishly huge and grotesquely veiny, they are affixed to a plaque inscribed with the words THE MOST VALUABLE SET OF ALL TIME and are not at all out of place in Appaloosa’s offices, which resemble a high-end sports bar—all polished mahogany and flat-screen TVs and black-and-gold Steelers paraphernalia—or a wealthy frat house. (“We had this client, they make breast implants,” says a former employee. “He loved to keep them on the desk, he’d love to throw them around.”) Appaloosa is staffed almost entirely by men.”
