OP is 100% right

Anyone who is sold on Moore before even taking a snap is lying to themselves, theirs a reason he wasn’t picked until the mid 20s. This was a weak WR class by all measures, and theres a bad trend of late first round WR under performing lately. By all account this was a risky pick.

I went back too see his both his sophomore and junior game tape and his route tree is extremely limited and he does not get a lot of separation, as a WR he has a ton of work to do. But I think he can end up being a bigger Golden Tate

Let’s not forget before we drafted him the Ridley threads outnumbered Moore 10/1 on this forum.

And Ridley lasted just as long plus 1.

i know everyone here is high on moore. i was as well, but looking at some film and at his stats plus taking into account the defenses he played were awful, i'm worried. he has a much higher bust potential than y'all realize. im one of the bigger homers here and even i can see it now. dj moore is like a less athletic tavon austin based on what ive seen. take the penn state game for example:

first play is a screen pass which goes for 4. okay, thats fine. next play is some gadget bullshit that loses 10 yards. the play after that is.. another screen.. next play is incomplete, and guess what, another fuging screen after that. his route tree is awful. literally awful. it isn't anything but screens and slants. you cant even call it a route tree. he doesnt have a gain over 10 yards untill maryland is down 21-0. as a matter of fact, that is another area of concern for me. garbage time stat padding. notice how many of his highlights come from his team being down multiple scores? yeah, i did too. but you know what? maybe this is just a bad game, a fluke. Let's look at another game instead.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhOQLGZIYjY

first catch is a screen. reinforcing narratives here. disappears for 2 snaps, then shows up and is covered well on a batted pass. disappears completely for a while again , as maryland falls behind 21-0. incomplete on a corner route. next play is a gadget play, reinforcing the tavon austin comparison. next play is a simple flat route which goes for a gain of like 8, his best play of the game outside of the gadget pass. next play is a screen. this gets really repitive doesn't it? screens, slants and one (1) flat route are the only successful routes i have seen him run. that isn't what we need, we need seperation. after a few plays of him being a ghost again, being targetted but covered like a blanket, or incompletions by the bad qb play, he makes a great catch but it only goes for like 5. another slant screen type play for a first but only 4 yards or so. next is another slant screen which is stuffed. and thats it.

gonna get poo'd to hell and back but i really dont care, im concerned as hell about this pick here.

"They've never been able to replace me, until today." Quote by Steve Smith, so, I'm good.

wouldn't say complete opposite, great in open field, rough at routes and actual wr like things, dj is a bit bigger though. i just hope for the sake of us he doesn't flop.

Moore is Moore than a bit bigger than Austin.

"Rough" at routes? Just because he wasn't asked to do more routes, much like most college receivers, doesn't mean that he can't do more. Moreover, the routes that he was asked to do, he excelled at.

Tavon Austin wish that he had the YACntc ability that Moore has. Austin needs space. Moore not only will make you pay in space, he makes his own space. Austin is not nearly as physical, and probably doesn't have anywhere near the athletic traits that Moore has (and, I haven't even looked the numbers up). They are just a different type of receiver. Moore is a real receiver, not a small gadget player that people will have to scheme for or figure out how to use.

Moore is also smart and gets "it." Can you say the same of Austin? Something has held the kid back---either smarts or physical limitations.

Moore played with crappy QBs (four or five of them) in a crapy, limited system in where he was basically their total offense, and everyone knew it. Of course his stats weren't the most efficient, but he still found a way to produce notwithstanding an absolutely horrible situation for a receiver, and he did it without complaint. Stats! Why don't you check out how much he accounted for in their offense?

You need to get the bigger picture! You have to add context before you start evaluating and making comparisons (and prematurely worrying).

You pointed out some negatives, which most receivers have coming out of college. Now to the positives that I saw:

He broke the first tackle about 50% of the time.

He has great hands, body built for an NFL season, and fluid running.

He had a curl route where he gained accurate position but the ball was poorly thrown.

He had an up and out where he beat what looked like double zone coverage for a completion but was another poorly thrown ball.

The QB from Maryland is average and couldn't make many throws outside out slants and screens, the timing throws were off. I wonder how much of the play calling was held back more because of the QB rather than any of the WRs?

Some people will find anything they can to bitch about. DJ Moore looked great in that video. The QB sucks, but DJ was good. You are bitching about the play calling and laying it on Moore's head. How is it his fault that the coaches called crappy plays, and that the QB could not get him the ball even when the play did work?

One video clip shows no proof at all and comment is inflated. Stop with the pessimism and try to give the guy a chance to prove himself instead of throwing him to the wolves like you have been. You can't prove anything until he performs on the field to see how he does.

Yeah it does and once again I want him to be good. I get you wana wait til season but it's offseason and based on what we have seen it isnt a good sign.

yeah... not concerned

Matt Jones was an amazing nfl wr, after all being athletic means you are a good receiver.

Dj has 4 inches and 35 lbs on Austin. Thats like saying DJ is the next Calvin Johnson.

You're looking at gadget plays which is the result of the play call by the offense and not the player. If you want to compare the two, please show me highlight reels of Austin breaking tackles routinely.

Watch an Austin film or highlight video from college.
