The Case against Munnerlyn

I realize that PFF scores are a bit questionable, but until there is a better evaluation of playing performance, we can use with caution.  Here is my official analysis--he sucked a lot last year.  Captain Munnerlyn's future has to be in question, with the addition of Jackson and the healthy return of Corn Elder.   We know Jackson can play the slot, and we drafted Elder to do it.   I see three strikes against Captain, before the financials are considered.

1. Donte Jackson.  I watched some YouTube on him last night, and got excited.  I do not see his lack of size as that much of a detriment.  His speed, quickness, etc. make up for it. 

2. Corn Elder.  He has been cleared by doctors and is motivated.  Corn is 5' 10" 190 and plays bigger.  He ran a 4.49 at his pro day.   This highlight reel gets you pumped, but if he can play at the level that puts him in the top 100 CBs in the league, he will surpass Munnerlyn's 2017 production.  He is more than capable, but with his excellent tackling skills, his ability to play special teams should be enough for now.

3.  Captain's mouth.  When Captain complained about playing time, saying to reporters, "I didn't come here for that," Panthers coach Ron Rivera said personnel groupings cut into Munnerlyn’s playing time. It should be noted that publicly aired laundry has not worked out well for other Panthers, such as Benjamin and Worley.  This is MORE  significant in Munnerlyn's case because he would be surrounded by young CBs. A leader that bashes his leaders creates rebellion if successful--termination if not.

The Panthers can save about $1.3m if they cut him after June 1.   One has to wonder if they want to see how Corn Elder and Donte Jackson  look in OTAs, but if Corn is back, I see where Munnerlyn may find it harder to find the field this year than last year.  Since he has shown the inclination to go to the press with his displeasure about playing time, I do not see a roster spot for him if Corn is healthy and shows that he has grasped the defense. 

I think a Munnerlyn June 2 cut is probable.  Of course, I was once wrong many, many times.

I am with you, but you have to have someone to play in his absence--who was that last year?   Think about it--we went with Shaq Thompson in the big nickel package against New Orleans because we felt that gave us the best chance vs. their run game.  Elder, who is a nasty tackler, would be the simple solution.

I don't think a case needs to be presented with all kinds of grades and evidence.  The eye test is enough for me.  Even without the entitled attitude I'd still say he gots ta go

Crazy thing, I didn't even know we gave munnerlyn a 17 million dollar freakin contract. Jesus christ, Gettleman must have knew he was on the way out and had to throw up his middle finger in some kind of way out the door.

We really don’t save much by cutting him. He wasn’t good last year but I’d definitely bring him back to compete. Jackson will be more outside and I find it very unlikely Corn takes over the nickel job easily coming off a redshirt year as a day 3 pick.

If elder looks halfway competent in camp munnerlyn should be an easy cut

If we keep him and cut him next year, the cap hit is 4m this year and 3m next year.

If we cut him now, its a 6.4m hit (we can spread over 2 years).

But assuming everyone is healthy, I'd trade him for a 7th/bag of chips.  We'd still have a hit of 4.5m dead which I don't think we can spread over 2 years, but that is the lowest cost alternative.

Cutting him now is premature as injuries happen, but if possible I'd try to trade him for something (anything).

No, I think Jackson and Thompson (big nickel) will do that, but that restricts how we can use Jackson.  I think Elder could work his way into the mix by the end of the season.

I think Elder is the obvious answer, but we haven't seen him in action yet. I saw that Ron was talking about Seymour playing nickel also (couldn't find the article). Doss also has the size for it. I have been a huge Captain fan, but he let me down last season.
