CMC Vs CJ Anderson : How is this Going to Work?

Christian McCaffrey : Age 21, 5'11'' 205 lbs

CJ Anderson : Age 27 , 5'8'' , 224 lbs

I've been wondering, how is this going to work? All signs were pointing towards CMC being the lead back and now we bring in CJ Anderson, who has been largely excellent rushing the football with over 4 yards per carry posted every season of his career, and going over 1000 last year.

I'm kinda confused now, we bring in a RB that's still decently young, much heavier than CMC and for all intents and purposes seemingly a much better runner? What exactly will their roles be? Will CMC just be reduced to spelling CJ like he was doing for Stew last season? Or is it the case that McCaffrey will see the bulk of carries and CJ is just there to do the short distance dirty work?

Or is it going to be on a basis of who performs the best in the early season? Previously its been Rons way of doing things to give seasoned vets the majority of snaps but this is an odd situation where the vet is being freshly bought in from another team, CAP has been in the dog house for some time, fozzy is out for the season, Stew is gone, AND we have a  new offensive coordinator. Just no idea what to expect..

split backs will be a nasty formation for us.  CJ gash it up the middle,  CMC kick it to the outside, Cam to a screen to either of them, or Cam takes it himself.  And with all that distraction in the backfield, Cam can nail DJ Moore who is streaming towards the end zone.

LaDainian Tomlinson, Michael Turner, and Darren Sproles were all on the roster in San Diego in 2007, and they did ok.  I'm not saying that CMC is LT, but CJ reminds me a little of Turner and maybe Samuels is our all purpose guy like Sproles was.

Point there is, Norv Turner has had this luxury of riches before and didn't squander it.  Add a QB like Cam to his toolbox, sit back, and enjoy...

CMC is not a in between tackles runner despite whatever gif filled long ass post from saca emerges. The panther know that about brought in CJ. CMC can be called on to run between the tackles but everyone besides saca and dumb posters on this forum know cmcs potential lies in the slot and scat back type play calling.

How will CJ work? Pretty simple, tough yards and great blocking and cmc will be used how he should be. It actually surprises me the coaching staff set this up to work how it should be. I’m very excited and optimistic about the run game this year.

I would expect them to have about a 60% to 40% carry ratio. CMC probably around 15 per game; CJ Anderson 10. The idea is CMC will still retain his position as the lead back. While I know plenty disagree with me, I still believe he's a solid between the tackles runner and should be the lead back. Rather than using power more than finesse, I feel we could work with using finesse as our main option with CJ as our power. Anderson does have an injury history, so I'd rather use the younger option as the main plate.

In essence, picture CMC grabbing the mainstream yards, while CJ Anderson likely grinds out the power and pass pro situations. On 3rd downs, we'll likely hand that role over to CJ Anderson more while giving CMC chances flanking out to the slot or Z.

All true, and Phillip Rivers is a hellova QB and always competes although he doesn't get much respect here. But Cam, Cam can do things Rivers never could as Rivers is about as mobile as Tom Brady.

I wonder what sort of roll out pass option Norv might come up with to get Cam in space where a defender must choose between staying with his guy or come up to meet Cam. The days of Shula beating the crap out of our Franchise QB with the read option hopefully will never return.
