Would you rather have Derwin James?

I honestly think the Panthers were smart to load up on offense. This offense should have no problems dropping 35+ points on any team in the league. Our defense should be able to hold most teams to 25 points with who we have.

No and I don't think they would have traded up for him either.  Quite frankly, the only round we get the WR we  need is in the first.  I posted many times that we are taking WR if Moore or Ridley was on the board. Of the two, I am really glad we got Moore.

We had Searcy and knew  a S would be there in the third round.   I knew we liked Jackson, and was not too surprised that we took him in the second round.  Frankly, the top three picks could not have gone better for Hurney.  Try a mock when you take SS in the first, and there is a need to reach for WR in the second--or trade up, losing a third to do it.

Derwin will be a good one, but he would have left us with holes.  I understand discussing players who were on the board, but not players that were long gone.  If we traded with SD to grab him, according to the trade chart, it would have cost us our first third rounder and our fifth and sixth rounders.  So if you compare James and Moore, you have to look at the big picture.

A lot of people subscribe to the notion that having a good defense helps your offense.  What is often forgotten is that that is a two way street.  Having a good offense that can move the sticks, control the clock, force teams to play from behind, can help a defense.

I'm happy with the direction we took.

One day y'all are going to realize the draft is about taking as many shots as possible in rounds 1-3 trading away first and second round picks hardly ever works

Yeah, but I also heard them(nflnetwork i think) say most teams are comprised of 4-7th round guys. I guess you can say they are the meat n potatoes of teams, but not the "stars".

I read an interesting article recently that proposed that we could have had Derwin James at pick 16.

The decision that may loom largest for Hurney and the Panthers was one they ultimately did not make. Shortly after the Saints made a splash to select Marcus Davenport with the 14th pick, the Panthers had a brief window, along with the rest of the league, to make a trade up the board for FSU safety Derwin James. Ultimately, the 16th pick was snatched up by the Bills, for the price of pick 22 and 65, meaning the Panthers potentially could’ve snagged it for 24 and 55. The discussions of Haynes as a ‘Joker’, Gaulden being able to cover tight ends and Jackson’s speed could’ve been answered in the form of one selection.

My question to the Huddle is looking back on the draft would you have done the trade?

Um yeah and it should have been done. I know we tried to trade up.

I would have been disappointed, but not mad in the slightest if we had taken James with the 24th pick. No way I'm being willy nilly with my 2nd and 3rd round picks though. James was not worth that relative to what we would have lost in Moore and Action Jackson.  You upgrade positions and fill holes via the draft by throwing as many darts on days one and two as you can. Of course, the goal is to fill as many holes as you can via free agency before the draft, and then you continue to do the same after the draft.

The way that Hurney has maneuvered the process of free agency pre and post draft, as well as the draft itself, appears to be pretty damned good, especially considering the purse strings and situation with Breeland.

We have acquired a lot of much needed potential (and Moore just be the best of the bunch). The team looks fairly balanced on offense and defense with the additions of Huddle-underated Cockrell and Searcy (as well as some of the younger DBs who were re-signed to compete). I don't think we would be as balanced, selling capital by moving up. And, color me crazy, but I think that Moore will make the bigger impact for us this season and seasons to come than James would have.
