Matt Kalil

While it may not be economical to cut Matt Kalil this season because we have a huge investment ($55m) in him,  this is just to explain that the contract was back loaded so that we can  escape the deal after the 2018 season.

"There is a potential out after the 2018 season with $7.2M in dead cap money if Kalil is released after June 1. While 7.2 million dollars is nothing to sneeze at, that dead cap money actually spreads over 2019 ($2.4M) & 2020 ($4.8M), so if the Panthers part ways with Kalil after 2018, they will actually save $10.35M (5.4%) in 2019 cap space."

Since Kalil's cap figure counts $6.9m in 2018 and rises to $12.9m in 2019, there is little chance the GM drops that kind of coin on the worst lineman.  Furthermore, benching a $7m contract is not that unusual.  So there is a chance Kalil sits this year and there is little chance he is on the roster in 2019.

Here is my theory, and my theories are never wrong 23% of the time.

Ron Rivera has been very reluctant to move Moton to LG--the obvious move.  Instead, we signed 43 linemen to audition for the LG job.  I think he wants the next Norwell to rise from the ashes and Moton to compete at LT.

So, if we can find a G in the pile of free agents, we can allow Moton to compete at LT.  Personally, I think he would be better at G, but he could be better at LT than what we have.

Potential LGs not named MOTON:

  • Tyler Larsen
  • Jeremiah Sirles
  • Amini Silatolu
  • Greg Van Roten
  • Dorian Johnson
  • Zach Banner
  • Duane Clausell
  • Brendon Mahon (UDFA) Getting a good feeling about him
  • Kyle Bosch (UDFA)
  • Taylor Hearn (UDFA)

NOTE: Signing Van Roten was interesting because it could be that Larsen, the backup C, is in the mix at LG.  If Larsen wins the LG job, Van Roten becomes the backup C, playing behind a guy who has missed 18 games in 2 seasons.

Kalil suck. Cut him after 18.

The Panthers fans who believed what Rivera said about CAP are the same fans who believe that Moton won’t start at LG.

One  of the reasons I posted this was I kept hearing that we were stuck with Kalil through  2019 (heard both sides).
I feel that Moton will be a better G than T, but the way they are loading up at the LG position suggests that they really want Moton on the outside.  I think, with Gettlemen gone and Ryan Kalil in his last year (if that matters) that Rivera wanted Moton to compete with Matt.  If the best player gets the LG job, then it is Moton.  If they are satisfied that the second best available player is better at LG than Kalil is at LT, you could see Moton at LT and Larsen (for example) at G.

in a word...NO...Moton is a Guard and will be a guard... what RR wants is Kalil to put in the work this off season and be who he is supposed to be...

Regardless of matt kalils contract and cap hit, he shouldn't be starting. I never understood ppl who say, we paid him so lets play him even tho he sucks. No, lets realize we made a mistake and bench him. Oh we paid kalil $55mil so lets keep him at LT and let cam get pummeled every other play......howabout we realize we made a mistake, bench him, get a replacement, and rememeber this stupid move in the future. I get it, at one point the players salary was correlated to the talent/impact they had. Not anymore with the salary cap going up and all these players being overpaid. Stupid ppl needa realize we decide who starts by talent. Not by how much theyre being paid.

I think that even if Larsen becomes our starting LG, he's still the backup center and #2 LG (I'd go Sirles at this point) steps in if R. Kalil gets injured. PLEASE NOT  SILATOLU!

This is all assuming that Moton doesn't get the LG job.

Or RR has history of being stuck his ways and wont change up for any reason.

I don't know why but I just can see him on the left side of the line. Didn't they say that switching sides of the line is like learning how to write with your left hand after being a righty all your life? I'm just not sure really.

Matt Kalil is a liability. I don't care how much he's getting paid, bench him and let an UDFA give it a go. I'm sure they'd be better than what we have. It's Gettleman's fault we overpaid for a scrub when Andrew Whitworth was available at a cheaper price. I'll admit, I'm still salty about the deal (even though I did say I'd wait and see).
