Expect a big year from Funchess this year.

I can't imagine how tough it is for a GM when they come across this situation. You have a player who has the potential and is trending to be a star but during the last year of their contract.

You have to take a gamble:

A. Offer an extension now for team friendly rate (Hope they reach the potential of the contract)

B. Wait until their contract is up and offer an extension, with the chances of them being a big deal breakout. (and spend a poo load of money on one player)

Either way has to be tough. You could end up with a mediocre player with a long term deal, or lose a great player because they were too expensive.

Don't worry, if history is any indication than we know Hurney will end up making the wrong move financially, whatever that may be.

Did you watch Funchess in 2017?

yeah, he had 840 yards, averaged 52 yards per game, hardly a big year in comparison to the more well known names in the league.  He will fit in great as a #2 though if someone else can step up.

Funchess will be playing for a big contract. We know most WR's ball out in their contract year. I expect a motivated Devin Funchess this year, many people say he doesn't have #1 WR potential, I disagree. He has it in him as we saw last year in a short period of games. I think people forget he got banged up with the shoulder injury towards the end of the year, and maybe that's why his production fell off. A healthy Funchess has the potential to be a top 15 WR in the NFL this year.

I hope he does well ...maybe unfair , but the shock when we picked him has never gone away...Gettlemagic

He is and will be fine...not here long enough to get us in too  much trouble...

Yeah bruh, Funchess was the #2 option for the 1st 8 games before KB was traded.

Then, get this, he was the only true option outside of CMC in receiving with Olsen down/used sparingly when healed, Byrd and Curtis injured for most of the season. What I am getting at is Funchess was blanked by the best as well as bracketed even when injured.

His play dipped with a badly banged up shoulder. Let me guess you assume a shoulder is not important to WO. Mmmk.

Backhalf of 2017 he had 5 of his 8 TD plus you can see when the shoulder injury affected his game.

If he was the #1 with a healthy Olsen, easily 1200 yds and double digit TDs.

Man the huddle is just illogical.

Hasn't flashed? He has flashed each and every season. I suspect he is a Moose type receiver for us, which with DJ Moore and Torrey Smith will be invaluable.

If he becomes a Moose-type receiver then things will turn out great.

A Moose type WR? We can only dream. Moose had nearly 10k receiving yards for us. He’s our second leading all-time receiver and 3rd place (Olsen) isn’t even close to catching him.

Moose played for Carolina for 11 years and averaged 841 yds and 4.5 TDs/yr. He really only had 3 years that are significantly better than Funch's 2017, all 3 of which generated > 1000 yds but only 1 of which had more TDs (magical 2004 and also the only year with more than 8 TDs...), and 2 of those years were in a pass-happy Siefert offense that Carolina may not see again. Based on what Devin has done thus far it's perfectly reasonable to think that Funchess could turn into a Moose-type player even if it is a 'ceiling' type of projection.

Funchess has Moose level ability. To me he took a major step last year when he became a focal point of the offense.

I don't think he can be the #1 guy (and honestly Moose was only a borderline WR1 outside of 2004, but he can be a high-end #2.

Pairing him with DJ Moore has the potential to be the best WR combo since Smitty/Moose.

And while its only potential as of now, it's still a LOT more exciting than any WR combo we had since 2013 with the potential to be more.

Yes.

You did not watch him.

I mean, you understand for most of the last half of the season, he was playing with a bum shoulder, and/or Kelvin Benjamin was hogging the targets.

Small sample size, whatever. These were really two of the three games he actually was completely healthy and the Panthers #1 WR. Take a read.

Umm, he was the #1 option all year. He had more targets than KB the first 8 games. 58 to 51.

Sorry.

Targets does not denote who the Panthers considered the #1 option. Funchess played the Y position while KB played X for those 8 games.
