This defense is going to look waaaay different than we have seen under Rivera

1. Starting with the DBs.  Rivera has always had zone heavy DB scheme defenses.  Now Washington is wanting to go a little more man.

 

I think your going to see our defense evolve to what many across the league have gone to lately.  Which is the Seattle defense with more man DBs and a use of the Joker.

 

In comes Marquis Haynes.

The joker is used across the league a Whole lot more here recently.  A lot started with Seattle and NE.  Then you saw the seattle scheme go to Atlanta and SF.  Along with the raiders using the same.

All are 4-3 defenses but one of the LBs is a stud edge rusher.  You saw this in NE with Jamie Collins prior to them trading them.  Kalil Mack (who was named probowl OLB AND DE)  and Atlanta with Beasley.

Haynes is a damn good athlete. I remember following him when he was being recruited by UNC.  Dude is a special athlete.  He didnt post the 40 that some expected but he is a jet.  He was a stud HS track guy.  In addition for edge rusher, i couldn't give 2 fugs about a 40 time.  IMO the 10 yard split time is a 1,000 times more important because it helps show how they burst out which is the important thing for a rusher.  Plus he has the strength (if anyone hasnt seen him bullrush over everyone favorite from last year, Cam Robinson)

Haynes is also said to be slender. At 235, but in a interview here lately he mentioned he is bulking up to 245 for playing weight.   There is another guy who gives us fit in Atlanta who was a 240 pound DE at clemson and has become a stud in the joker LB role.  Now I dont think he will put up the #s as Beasley.  I am excited to see how he is used and expect to see him get some sacks here in the future.  I hated the pick at first, but really warming up to it now

From the moment Rivera arrived in Charlotte, he wanted a very diverse defense that is capable of showing any looks, and executing from them. 

We've seen very little of that, as best laid plans get laid to waste by the reality of playing in the NFL. From the cap, to injuries, to coaching changes. 

It'll be good to see more, because this defense is capable of being more.

Haynes fits right in line with the theme of this years draft (versatility).

He has experience standing up and with his hand in the dirt. I saw someone compare him to Everette Brown and I couldn't help but chuckle. Haynes isn't some one year wonder like Brown was (look at Browns college statistics), in fact, Haynes is the all-time sack leader at Ole Miss and had at least seven sacks in each of his four year at Ole Miss.

While Haynes said he viewed himself as a stand up OLB pass rusher, I think with the right coaching he can be dominant as both an EDGE and an OLB. Let's not take for granted that he will have one of the best to ever lace them up in Julius Peppers as a primary mentor. With Peppers knowledge as an EDGE and a stand up pass rusher, Haynes has a great role model to rely on.

Get him up to 245 and just let him pin his ears back and go after the QB on 3rd down.

Pep, Butler, KK, Addison up front 

Shaq and Luke at LB.  Haynes on the edge as the joker OLB

Bradberry and Jackson outside.  

Gaulden at FS moving up and covering the slot man Honey Badger style.

Let him be a situational pass rusher this season and watch him grow the next!!

 

    Between OTAs, TC, and especially PreSeason, there should be plenty of opportunities to judge where he needs to play to get the best out of him.

 

    I really think he and Obada are going to get lots of attention in the next few months. If we can keep these two off of the Practice Squad, it makes us better. And I can live with that.

 

     I have heard stories about both of them having great "Get offs". That they look like they know the snap count they get in the backfield so quickly.

 

    All I know is that Dallas absolutely hated losing Obada. And anything that irks them, tickles me. So I have that going for me.

35.6 arms, 1.53 10yd split, 4.63 40 time, great bend, high motor. I really like Obada.

Haynes is lethal weapon and will be versatile Edge/LB. I love his play style.

Shaq and Luke can blitz too.

Jackson and Gaulden also can get into the back field.

Haynes works on improving his coverage skills to just competent, it's gonna make it harder for team to identify blitzes.

I'm stoked.

    That gives us what, 6 DEs, (Not counting Haynes.) and 5 DTs counting Norton. Not sure we can keep them all. Going to be interesting watching this unfold. Does Obada still get that European Exemption? Cuz if we put him on the PS, he is going to get poached.

 

    One way or another. If we wanted too, we could put a good deal of speed on the field on 3rd downs.
