Front 4 combinations

While I was criticized, nay, mocked for suggesting that we are looking for versatility on the defensive side of the ball (All signs point to "yes"). I will continue to expose myself (not literally) by examining the front 4.  We can't count on Peppers to get 11 sacks this year; last year was an anomaly.  Addison will be 31 and had his first double-digit sack total in his career.  We can't count on that.  Hall?  Well, he is/was a project, and the only DEs we have had who were productive in year 2 are Peppers and maybe Rucker.  Can we expect anything from the diminutive Marques Haynes DE/Joker during his rookie season?

So where are we getting pressure this year?  t is my opinion that we are going to use combinations to create multiple areas of confusion.  The offense will know that we are going to attack, but from where?

Imagine these things that were not possible or practical last year:

1. LBs in A Gap, Addison rushes B gap, Poe stunts behind him and rushes through C gap as OT watches Haynes drop into zone LB coverage, then attempting to regroup in time to stop Poe.  On the other side of the L, peppers or Addison is rushing. Short is shooting his gap because the G stepped down to help the C block Luke shooting A gap.  Oh my!   We have a DE who can cover TEs/LB zones and we have a NT that can rush.

2. From that same set, Poe stuffs A gap, Haynes rushes, Addison/Peppers rush from the other side, and the LBs show blitz and drop into zone coverage, taking away the seams and slants.  Short stuffs the other A gap to QB.  NB Jackson blitzes, as Gaulden takes his man and Cockrell and Bradberry drop into zone coverage.  Now you have 22 sacks in 2017 coming at you from one side, a 235 lb. 4.55 speed end coming from the other, and a 4.32 CB bulleting toward the QB from the slot.  The RB rule, blocking inside out, checks LBs first (A gap) and knows to help the T trying to block Haynes.  He also is aware that Peppers/Addison is on the other side.  Then here comes Action Jackson.

Having versatile DBs allows us to switch roles without losing much.  Having an athletic, versatile NT is an incredible advantage.  Having a DE that can drop in coverage or blitz is also huge--we never really had this stuff before.

Peppers sacks weren't anomaly. Every time someone says that it annoys me. He was successful because we blitzed like crazy and also had KK and Addison. If anything we should build on last year by adding Pope's rushing ability to the mix. Also cutting CJ should help simply because he was done and did nothing.

There is an anomaly on there but i'll let OP find it, maybe look up that definition again.

It's no coincidence that both our new DBs are solid tacklers with blitzing abilities.

Luke, Shaq, TD, Jackson, Gaulden, and Haynes will all be contributing on top of our D-Line.

All these guys can cover too. Gonna be a headache for QBs to figure out where the blitz is coming from.

EDIT: And Corn and Cap too, if Cap's matured a bit.

he had a couple taken away by some dumb calls too. he single handedly came around and got a sack but it was called back multiple times

Not annoying you is not on my to do list.  A 37-year old DE getting 11 sacks, regardless or what you think, is an anomaly. His last season getting at least 11 sacks?  2012--when he was 32.

Anomaly.  It is exactly what it was.

He played LB in Chicago and GB.... Not even the same as we use him, so yes, his #s will drop

Kid you really need to look up that word and realize what it means. Because I explained exactly why it wasn't. Don't make a fool of yourself.
