What if Marty Hurney

How many GM interviews did Marty get after he was canned?

0 but what does that have to do with the question?

Sooner or later a new owner is going to make the change. It's inevitable. If the draft pans out and these young guys and the team do well I am not going to be beating the drum for it to be sooner.

Why is everyone hung up on extending Olsen? It was a good deal that saved cap space this year. I just don't understand why everyone is so against this and see it as a bad thing. Is it just because it was HUrney that did it?

Because most other teams wouldn't have done it.

Teams like the Steelers and the Patriots don't let players who are already under contract hold them hostage.

Guaranteed one of the teams would have given Greg Olsen double the pay we would have given him just to have him on that team but yeah many teams wouldn't do it.

Nobody would pay Olsen double. That would make him the highest paid TE by a factor of nearly 2x

Well, most teams don't have a future hall of fame TE who is still a crucial part of the offense that that is in the last year of his contract.

And I think you are wrong on two points. He was not holding the team hostage. At no point did he say he was going to leave if he did not get an extension. That was fabricated by Joseph Person. He merely stated that he was hoping to get an extension so he could stay in Carolina and play. The rest was an assumption based on him interviewing for a position outside of football.

True, though I do wonder if the players have finally found a use for Person. He seems like the type to be the mouthpiece of whoever will give him something to print.

Actually, our friend Verge (friends with a scout) also said he had heard that Olsen threatened the team with retirement.

Beyond that though, even teams with Hall of Fame quality players don't tend to give additional extensions within two years of the last extension, especially to players in their 30s.

I like Olsen, but if Joe Montana, Jerry Rice and Emmitt Smith can be let go, so can he.

Those three were already declining in performance, and had capable back ups in place. Neither of those are true in this case.

How much did Olsen play last year?

Injuries are not only more common with players in their thirties, but also harder to recover from. That's why most teams don't do stuff like this. They'd rather let a player go too early than too late.

His last contract was signed in 2015. Not within 2 years.

He started asking for the additional extension last year.

Didn't get it then, but got additional incentives added then got the full extension a year later.

Throw in that a good number of teams would have waited to see how well a 33 year old player recovered from that injury before going ahead and extending him.

Again for those who don't remember or don't care to do some simple research regarding the discussion. Olsen was given additional incentives for the 2017 season. The contract was always written to expire at the end of 2018.

He didn't meet those incentives so nothing extra was given to him.
