DJ Moore - Judge For Yourself

Well. First, let me get it out of the way by saying I like the pick. He's definitely the one WR from this class with the most potential, and I'd love to see it realized. Could easily be a Golden Tate type player, except even better.

However, he arguably has a few issues for himself. @Yaboychris28 got a lot of poop for speaking it out loud, but he does have a point. While Moore's QB were trash cans, he also clearly suffered from Maryland's apparent poor coaching.

One thing that's lacking is consistency and confidence in his route running. Half the time, it seems he's unsure on the field or appears to just wing whatever his assignment was. It's weird, because he shows elite traits after the catch and at random spots, and sort of gives up and forces contested balls/bad angles on himself. This is certainly all fixable by coaching, and I'm confident Lance Taylor can iron it out over time.

However, for those expecting Moore to play outside and be consistently winning such his rookie year, I honestly don't think that's the best role for him yet.

I'll let you see for yourself here. These all are vertical stem routes he runs, which generally put shows his play on the outside.

Judge for yourself.

I personally think he'll still be a major factor for the Panthers his rookie year, but not in the role you think of him. Think of him with a baseline Jarvis Landry type role - winning in the short and intermediate game. That's what I expect his rookie year to be like, except with actual better athleticism, movement, and not being a target hog. Panthers sorely need the "layups" in their offense instead of using CMC for that all the time

As far as being that full field threat, I don't think he'll be there yet early on. With what's shown, he's in a weird spot. Against press, he clearly struggles. Doesn't simply show ability to 'stack' the corner that you want to see at times, and let's CBs beat him early with their hands, causing separation issues.

In contrast, here's how Curtis Samuel did against press in college. No, I'm not going to post every single clip of him going against press, but I'm simply using this as education material on proper stacking of the DB.

However, he oddly shows great ability to use his hands and direct the DB away at the top of the route. That's why I'm wary of using him as a 'Z' outside receiver early on and prefer if we contain him to primarily "F/Y" (slot) for his rookie seson. The elements I'm noticing are stuff that is easily fixable, and I'm sure Lance Taylor could do it.

Just don't have unreasonably high expectations for the kid just yet.

So, what do you think?

EDIT: @*FreeFua* here’s proof this Landry comp from me came about 2 days ago, not from you.

Norv Turner went to his Pro Day and worked him on routes and everything and loved what he saw. He has incredible potential that I think Cam and Norv will get out of him. I'm very excited to watch him

People are acting like Norv invented football. What exactly has he won?

    • I find it more like now that I have been forced to watch Young so much it isn’t as much of a shock to my senses.   Desensitized they call it.   For real, it just looks normal almost now. Where the first game of 2023 I wasn’t sure what I was looking at it was so out of bounds for NFL type play. I literally couldn’t make sense of what I had seen vs Atlanta that first week.
    • Lynch in SF. Great is subjective but he has done pretty well there.
    • Sure, except Stroud has the ability to stretch the field with deep passes. He did that often last night with ease, but couldn’t connect on many due to being flustered by the defense. BY9 gets flustered and can’t throw screens, let alone even think about any deeper passes. Stroud would’ve changed the franchise and done more with the situation last year. My thought at least.    the hope is that last year showed tepper that he needed to step back from football decisions. There’s a positive in most situations and maybe we’ll see a new tepper in the near future.
