I won't say this draft was perfect.  The developmental edge rusher was a weird one but we're looking good peeps.

The following charts break down our defensive snap counts at the end of last season when we were playing pretty well.

Defensively, a few observations:

  • Kurt Coleman, when 100%, was our full time FS
  • Without a for sure FS starter, it was 50/50 Byrd/Jones :(  Either Gaulden is good to go or we start Searcy (who's started plenty in his career)
  • Worley is the obvious void, now it's Cockrell (90%+/gm)
  • Munnerlyn's time is now Jackson's (30-40%/gm)
  • What happens without TD games 1-4? Well, yes, more nickel.  Otherwise, Mayo is solid, however, we can't hedge our bets and have to look to the future.  We've got a fresh OLB
  • We've got extra redshirts in Hall and Elder who should get playing time
  • +A developmental DE

Notes:

  • Replace Norwell with Moton or Sirles (OT: Stop overracting to Amini, he's not going to be our starter)  Sirles was starting for the Vikes when we played them FYI.
  • Dickson at 35% (Sometimes near 50%) will be replaced with Ian Thomas (Maybe another UFA comes in)
  • We now have Funchess and Moore to get 85%+ each routinely.  Seriously, we marched into the playoffs with Clay and Bersin being our #2 and 3.  We should feel good folks.
  • We closed those last 4-5 games with Funchess-Clay-Shepard-Byrd-Bersin.  We now have Moore-Funchess-Smith-Wright-Samuel to work with with a new OC.

The point: The rookies we got are at the most opportune positions to get playing time considering who's gone. The whole "Will they be a starter?" is not the way to look at it.  Minus LG and RB, we addressed the biggest problem areas, like the pick or not.

Also, obligatory, f*ck Russell Shepard.

RB isn't a big problem and still plenty of time to get one anyway.

G/LT still an issue but we're probably rolling with what we got....issue with that is....those 2 spots can bring our offense to a stop like they have in the past regardless of the weapons we have.

I agree.  Just look at how someone like Chris Carson can get rolling for SEA with their awful line last year.  We're fine there.  Outside of Penny, I wasn't really overly excited about any RBs outside maybe John Kelly and Mark Walton.

G is an issue but not having a long term solution doesn't mean Moton can't beast it there.  I personally think we may be better off with Williams at LG and Moton at RT but we'll see what happens.  Our UFA signings, Sirles and Cockrell in particular, are being quite overlooked in my view.
