How the hell is he supposed to be able to start when he has a top 5 UT ahead of him?

Butler’s great as a rotational piece and helping keep a fresh tough D-line. He’s no bust just because we have a clear top 5 DT playing ahead of him.

bust is a bad word...

to date he hasn’t been worth the pick and that isn’t really Butler’s fault.  Can say the same for Shaq.  And I am a huge Shaq fan too.

I get that. And that's completely fair.

Normally a first-round draft pick has taken a substantial role by this point. You don't draft projects in the first round, especially at positions you are already stocked in.

He may turn out fine. But he was the wrong pick.

The strength of Butler was said to be his pass rushing ability, but unfortunately we haven't been able to see that consistently due to injuries at the beginning of the seasons.

But he has shown many flashes. He is very young and playing against grown men. We need to remember that he is younger than Hurst. He has a lot of time to become the player that doesn't just flash but play consistently.

I'm not ready to call him a bust yet, but we need to see something from him soon. The fact that we went out and made a decent splash at DT with the Poe signing when we weren't exactly flush with cap space doesn't exactly inspire me with hope regarding how the coaches feel about his development.

Man, if you are complaining about our DT depth you just don't get it.  We are fuggin great there and yes, I think he could be great especially getting rest with that awesome rotation.

Who's complaining? Simply saying that its unlikely that Butler will get enough snaps to breakout. If that's complaining to you, idk what to tell you.

Poe = NT

Butler = UT

Vernon Butler is what happens when you buy into the “BPA” to a fault. Gettlemen no doubt thought he was the best player available and also wanted him as possible negotiating leverage for Star and KK. The problem is that with no playing time available he got buried on the bench...If he had gone to a DT-needy team he would have been a solid starter.

That’s my whole point of this post. Butler is the same age NOW that Short was his rookie year. Short is 29 and at an age where his play and body might start declining. The Panthers might find themselves in need of a replacement sooner than most think and Butler is in line to be that guy.

Not every guy steps right in and is a star. Sometimes you have to wait your turn until you get your chance. It’s not like Butler has been starting every game and crapping the bed. He really hasn’t played very much.

No one is giving up on Butler. As a first rounder he is virtually guaranteed to play out his rookie contract. So he is surely worth a roster place as depth and is cheap on his rookie contract. Butler isn't going anywhere. You don't need to lobby for him as if his spot is in danger. We will know if he fits the long term plans if we pick up his 5th year option when the time comes.

Yeah that makes the pick a bust. I’m not saying HE sucks, but the pick most certainly did.

Lol you don’t get it. It’s bc our DT depth is so strong that we have a bunch of weaknesses elsewhere on the roster. Or do you want another DT this year so you can brag about how great our depth is?

True, but the front 4 is not getting pressure as a unit alone.

I rather go DE because Peppers is retired after this season or gone to another team.
