What's up with Moton

What makes you think this, other than huddle opinion?

Seriously.

His rookie season they really only had him focusing on both tackle positions.

Yes, he was depth at guard also, because he IS capable of playing guard. His value it at tackle.

Now if he beats out the competition at guard, more power to him, but it also would make our depth messed up, because he'd still be the first to backup any tackle spot, which means we'd be changing two spots on the line due to injury, which is far from ideal.

His pre-draft analysis said he would be a good guard.

DRAFT ANALYSIS:

"He's a right tackle or a guard. I loved his game against Illinois. He played against Dawuane Smoot and handled him." -- Mike Mayock

6'5"HEIGHT

34 1/8"ARM LENGTH

319LBS.WEIGHT

10 5/8"HANDS

OVERVIEW

The Broncos brought aboard Moton after he was named a first-team all-Michigan pick as a high school senior. He redshirted in 2012, but started every game over the past four years for WMU. Moton lined up at right tackle for all 25 games of the 2013 and 2014 seasons. He moved to right guard in 2015, receiving enough votes from MAC coaches to be named third-team all-conference. Moton moved back to the right tackle spot as a senior, earning first-team All-MAC and multiple All-American honors in helping the Broncos "row the boat" to a MAC championship.

ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS

Big off the bus. Massive frame with good arm thickness and proportional build in his legs. Plus arm length with big hands. Starting experience at right guard and tackle. Comes off the ball with pad level. Makes concerted effort to drop hips and roll under his target at contact. Has dominant drive-blocking potential. His down blocks turn into steam-rollings. Coordinates hips and hands for maximum pop through point of contact as run blocker. Held his own against Ohio State in 2015 and smothered Illinois DE Dawuane Smoot this season. A bear with strong paws. Plays tend to end for defender once he latches on. Functional climbing to second-level target. Bull rushers wont bully him very often.

WEAKNESSES

Will need to play with quicker hands into punch as guard. Looping, wide approach with hands toward target could open his chest to defenders. Footwork needs plenty of work. Needs choppier feet. Waist bending in run game needs correction. Content to make blocks at angles that need to be squared up. Lateral and move blocks feature inconsistent base width. Issues coming to balance before contact if block isn't right in front of him. Average body control and athleticism. Will be limited to primarily power-based schemes. Has issues with oversetting in pass pro. Can be fooled by twists.

DRAFT PROJECTION

 Round 2-3

SOURCES TELL US

"I had to go back and watch his 2015 tape when he played guard. He was a little rough at tackle this year but that isn't his spot. Big and strong as a guard. He was moving guys from Ohio State around like it was nothing." -- Area scout for NFC team

NFL COMPARISON

 Zach Fulton

BOTTOM LINE

Four-year starter for ascending Western Michigan program. Size and potential to dominate at the point of attack with pure power should make him a coveted right guard prospect. He can be a little stiff in his movements and his footwork needs plenty of work, but he's functional in both areas. Might need additional work before he is ready to take on the wily, athletic defensive tackles in the NFL, but his physical traits and power give him a chance to become a reliable NFL starter.

if you are seriously sitting there getting butt tight and worried about what Rivera is saying personnel wise in April before the draft...   smdfh x10

you want there to appear to be as many holes as possible and to be as vague about them as possible. That and you want to make it seem like there are no holes..

its all a smokescreen, and if you have a hard time understanding that.. then i dont know what to tell ya bud.

I think Amini is only ahead because he was the backup to Norwell last season...just a depth chart technicality.

Rivera did say Moton would have a chance to start at that spot.  It will be an open competition once TC begins.

It would be unwise not to promote the idea of “competing for the spot” at this point. If he said he had Moton penciled in to start it could have consequences in lack of effort and other things a team doesn’t need.  Let them compete. Anything can happen.

First of all it wasn't a fake opinion.

Second, why would Silatolu be ahead of him?

Third, I hadn't heard RR saying that or I wouldn't have asked the question

Forth don't be a prick.

Cause Rivera wants him to earn it & show the team he is the top dog.

Do some reserach.

We are all pricks.

Even though we shouldn't given all of his previous bungles, I'll give Ron the benefit of the doubt that he won't trot Silatolu out there.  I said it before, but if Silatolu is the starter at LG in week one, you will know that there never truly was a competition for the spot - whether with Moton or whoever we draft for the position.

In no world is Amini a better LG replacement for anyone. If there's a weakness of Rivera, it's roster management and talent identification.

Be patient.  Relax.

Amini hasn't been getting it done though.

People get sand in there vages when you point out Moton isn't a Starting LG and there new and improved Hurney did nothing to address Cam's protection again.

Moton was drafted as RT but we didn't expect D.Williams to progress as he did, which is a good thing! That means we developed a player!

Also Moton can play multiple positions from what was said about him so we will see.

I believe Norv will also have his input so if Moton outplays Amini then its his job. Let's see how it plays out.

At the time Moton was drafted, Williams was not a full-time starter at RT, Kalil had just been signed as a LT, Turner was in the last year of his contract and was going to be expensive to extend, Norwell was pretty solid but was not yet an All-Pro, and Ryan Kalil was getting old.  It was obvious we needed some talent on the line - but we weren't quite sure where.  Moton was an ideal choice for his flexibility.

Moton will have a  long and successful NFL career.  But he may not become a full-time starter until year 3.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that Rivera is better at identifying NFL talent than anyone who frequents this board.  The guy's headed into his 8th season in a profession where the average career length is 3.3 years.  Somehow he's kept his job despite having the worst GM and second worst GM in football every year (according to my Huddle sources), and an Owner who's such a distraction that no one wants to play in Charlotte (again, according to my Huddle sources).  He's won COTY year twice and brought a team to the Super Bowl.

If he thinks Amini is better than Moton right now, and you don't, then you should probably re-evaluate how you grade players.

Of course, I say all that but he probably thought Russell Shepard was ready to be a starting Wide Receiver and a Ted Ginn replacement last year, so maybe there are some gaps in his skill set after all.
