NCfan's Mock draft

My Final mock prior to draft

Hurney will look to setup to impress the new owner and keep his Job safe.  Meanwhile new OC Norv Turner will be in his ear wanting new toys for his offense.

1. Calvin Ridley- 5 QBs run off the board in the 1st, along with the talent at LB and DL push WRs down.  Sutton and DJ Moore jump off the board first letting Ridley fall right into our lap.  Hurney was fully prepared to take 1 of these CBs.  Jackson, Alexander, Hughes, or Oliver.  But it impossible to keep from drafting Ridley here.

2. Trade! We trade away our #88 comp pick and move to the upper end of the 2nd.

Justin Reid- we need Safety help Bad.  We need that center fielder.  All the mocks have him going to us in the first or falling to the chargers in the 2nd.  Hurney likes him and sees a day 1 impact starter, so easily makes the trade.  Its not the first time Hurney moved up to grab someone he really likes (Otah, Brown, Armanti, etc)

3. Nick Chubb- RBs will fall.  Some serious talent, but RB just isnt just a position teams draft high on.  Yes Fournette and CMC went top 10 last year and Barkley probably will go top 5.  But they just arent valued that high.  Only 4 RBs in last years talented class went in the 1st 2  rounds.  Talent wise Cook and Mixon were more highly touted talent wise than every RB not named Barkley in this class.  One of Penny or Chubb will be at #85.  Guice very well could fall to the top of the 2nd.  Next Michel and Ronald Jones come off because of them being 3 down APY guys like Kamara.  Next Penny, Kerryon Johnson, Chubb, and Freeman will go.   Kareem Hunt went #86 last year, we get Chubb at #85. Chubb falls because he is looked as a big Compliment back not every down back.

CMC and Chubb are our version of Ingram and Kamara

"Chubb could become an average NFL starter, but his lack of third down value may end up hurting his draft stock."

  • "Doesn't possess run-away speed"
  • "Wasn't used often on passing downs at Georgia"

5. Dalton Schultz- seen him mocked up as high as bottom of the 3rd.  But was reading some interesting stuff here recently, where a few people really think TEs are REALLY going to drop this year.  Think 1 tops or possibly None will go in the 1st this year.  People are really "projecting" them high this year after last years class (which was the best TE class in a Looooooong time).  People are just on a High on TEs going round 1 after last years class.  You have to have some serious talent at TE to go round 1.  Again just not a position teams draft high on. The top TE in this class isnt even on the same level as Hunter Henry who was a 2nd rounder 2 years ago.  Besides last years freak class. Only 4 TEs have gone round 1 since 2008.  Ebron, Eifert, Gresham, Pettigrew.  Those 4 were drafted to the Lions and Bengals.

Schultz is a Lot like George Kittle last year just not near the athlete (Kittle put up Gesicki, who everyone is drooling ove, athletic #s but fell to the 5th.)

Schultz, we aren't necessarily looking for a replacement for Olsen rather than a replacement for Dixon at Starter for #2 TE.  He was rarely used in the passing game.  Was a primary blocker and a Good one at that.  He was a key blocker for CMC and Love.  The Stanford staff claim he has all the ability and shown it in practice to be a weapon in the passing game.  Panthers current WR coach was the RB coach there so he got to see a Lot of what Schultz could do in Practice

Don't wanna trade up

I agree .. This draft is deep enough to really make some head way with 4 picks in the top 100... You can get 2 day one starters and 2 backup/future starters with those 1st 4 picks.

Especially in the 3rd a lot of good players will fall

Agreed that there will be some decent players fall to the 3rd.

But dont see 1 extra guy there that will out weigh the impact trading up for a borderline rd 1 safety in Reid.

We still get 4 impact guys.  3 starters and 1 compliment guy in Chubb.
