With Worley done, the 2016 draft looks like one of our worst ever

Watching fans screaming out the names of every failed Hurney draft pick as a means of downplaying Gettleman's own failed draft picks while simultaneously giving Gettleman all credit for wins that were directly helmed by two franchise cornerstone players he inherited from Hurney in Cam and Luke is some bizarre poo. How do you get that far down the rabbit hole?

you just described 90% of the Huddle

My apologies for actually discussing the topic at hand. The thread title and discussion is suggesting that the 2016 draft just became the worst draft in Panthers history because of Worley's arrest this weekend. If you disagree with my assertion that there are at least two worse drafts, then tell me why I'm wrong and tone down the hyperbole.

I haven't stated it was our worst draft ever.

But it was undoubtedly a very poor draft that coincided with other offseason failures which directly led to us following up a Super Bowl appearance with only 6 wins. We then followed that up by letting our established speed threat walk to New Orleans and torch us while they went on to beat us 3 times and take over the division. That should not happen under the watchful eye of someone who is supposed to be the executive of the year. The only reason we didn't end up once again staring back to back losing seasons right in the face was thanks to heroics by none other than Cam Newton.

Looking back at our draft history,  I am not sure that 2016 even makes the bottom five.

97, 98, 99, 09, and 2010 were all worse imo.  Here is our 98 draft.  Worst draft ever imo, for us.

1 (14) DE Jason Peter Nebraska
2 (44)   Choice to Miami
3a (62) * DE Chuck Wiley Louisiana State
3b (73) DL Mitch Marrow Pennsylvania
4 (106) WR Donald Hayes Wisconsin
5 (136) LB Jerry Jensen Washington
6 (165) S Damien Richardson Arizona State
7a (196) # DL Viliami Maumau Colorado
7b (203)   Choice to Pittsburgh
7c (228) % WR Jim Turner Syracuse

Chuck Wiley might just have been the best of the bunch.

2017s draft could have been much better also. I said it then and I'll say it now, there was no need to draft CMac with our top 10 pick. Running backs have been a deep class for a couple years now and was last year also. More so, running back is the easiest position to play. Look at the success at mid round running backs. Hunt, Kamara, Cook, D.Murray, J.Howard, L.Mccoy, Lev Bell to name a few.

We could have ended up with marshon lattimore in the 1st and a dalvin cook in the second.

Every draft could always have been better given the benefit of hindsight.

I generally agree but much as I like cmc he got over drafted, the value for rb’s have constantly been dropping year after year, was generally just a smarter and cost efficient move to grab the top rated cb, maybe even s or trade back instead of taking a rb 8th overall. Follow that pick up with a developmental WR just didn’t boad well imo.

I didn't want CMC at #8 but I resigned myself to the fact that he was likely going to be the pick. Much like Butler and Shaq before him.

Hindsight being 20/20, #8 should've been a discussion between Lattimore and Barnett.

But going off the team before the draft in 2016, a top cb,de, or s value and cost wise was better than a rb, hindsight or not. A cb,s,de on a rookie contract for 4-5 yrs > rb on a rookie contract for 4-5 years. Especially top 10, I can understand the picks after but he botched that 1st round pick in cmc, especially for a guy who was hailed as being so much better talent evaluator then hurney.

I will still say there’s a possible cmc outshines those guys I’ve listed but I’m just going off the current body of work.
