With Worley done, the 2016 draft looks like one of our worst ever

1. Vernon Butler
2. James Bradberry
3. Daryl Worley
4. Zack Sanchez
5. Beau Sandland

The only two left on the roster are Bradberry and Butler. Butler has done next to nothing, and Bradberry is... fine. Worley was never that good, Sanchez is on the practice squad, and Sandland never played a down for us.

This is just after two years and it's this bad. Butler might be gone in a year or two, and Bradberry isn't even a given for being a long-term starter either.

Holy crap that is a terrible draft. We will know a lot about Butler after this year.

As far as lousy drafts are concerned, it's hard to top 1998.  Here's a link to our draft history, for the curious:  https://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/car/draft.htm

If you use their AV measure to calculate draft values, here's what you get (note that the more recent a draft, the worse the AV will be just because it grows over time).  And yeah, 2009 was also pretty bad.

McC was the 8th overall pick. That pick is more than twice as valuable as pick 31 (where Butler was taken). Dumb example. Butler has been injured and even when healthy hasn't had much of an opportunity at all. He may not get it here with KK and Poe healthy but it's way too early to call him a bust. I wouldn't be surprised if we traded him on draft day and he made a pro bowl elsewhere.

Absolutely nothing indicates that he is a Pro Bowler.

Regarding whether he is a bust, you may be correct that it may just be too early, but only by a tad. This year will be the crossroads. I doubt we'd get much trade value out of him considering his career so far.

First and even second rounders usually do something by year two at least, regardless of what position they're drafted. If they haven't, there is usually a compelling reason why.

Bradberry's play last season---his first full season---when he was really tested, he played very poorly. It's not they type of play you expect from a second rounder. You also expect a player to get better, not worse from year one to two.

Bradberry is on thin ice, as far as I'm concerned. He probably gets more benefit of doubt that he deserves, but I'll hold on to the fading ghost that was his rookie season for a time. Butler gets a little more benefit of doubt because he hasn't really played enough to draw a conclusion that he is overrated, but he better show something really soon. Basically, what I'm saying is that I'm highly skeptical of both, and I'm not holding my breath.

And these J-No down-talkers can say what they want, we saw enough raw flashes in his game during his rookie season that we knew that there may be something special to his game. He was benched for going too far off the script and freelancing back there, so he ended up in Rivera's doghouse. His play was arguably as never terrible as what Bradberry put down last season, but even if you think that it was, it wasn't for lack of talent. He absolutely outplayed his 5th round draft status.

What makes matters worse is this couldn't have happened at the worst time. Right after a Super Bowl appearance where we were primed to supposedly make another postseason run in a weakened NFC while our division was still reeling. Now the NFC South has strengthened around us while we faltered.

The posters that rationalize this failure, and make excuses are just white noise, no different than the fans that used to make excuses for Hurney's failures years ago. The sad part is these fans somehow fail to realize they have become exactly that which they so steadfastly condemn.

He's still behind two very good DTs. What gets me is it was a luxury pick in a team that couldn't afford the luxury. Then he goes need 3 picks after that. Made no damn sense.

Though I agree that was a bad draft.....I wonder what drafts normally look like after a trip to the Superbowl.  You have a first round pick...but it is so low it is nearly a second.   With the exception of the secondary, most of the team returned, leaving little room for the new guys to get snaps.  Yes Worely was clearly a reach.  But Butler might have started somewhere else, if he didn't keep getting injured...and Bradberry is on par with a very low second nearly 3rd round pick.  Considering it is one of the worst placements we've  had in draft, I consider it on par.

I believe this notion that every 1st round pick...regardless of pick# and position is supposed to be an eventual pro-bowler is an unreasonable expectation.

First team in NFL history to go 15-1 and then miss the playoffs entirely the next season.
