This will mess with your draft history narrative...

It's hard to draft more busts when you trade away all of your picks for a bust.

You would think, but when Dave was here the Panthers traded picks every year, and had the fewest players drafted in the league. It didn't help him.

In before people make this discussion about Gettleman in a pathetic attempt to defend Hurney's mistakes.

He also didn't pull the massive boners that were Armanti Edwards and Everette Brown.

He would have traded the Cam pick the year before if there weren't a league rule against trading more than two consecutive first round picks.

Oh, we're back on that trade rumor that was debunked every time it was brought up again.

Dave sucked ass, and I'm glad he isn't drafting for this Panthers this year.

It's actually been confirmed by someone who was there.

Hurney did indeed try to trade the 2011 first for Jimmy Clausen. The scouting staff talked him out of it.

Wins...losses...big picture... That's all that matters.

I'm sure if you wanted and you tried hard enough, you could put a positive spin on Matt Millen as a GM too.

Reality: If you have to go to this much effort to make somebody look like they're good at something, they're not.

Hey, I just posted the link.  Turns out that Hurney's problems are not necessarily around the draft, so we don't need to worry too much about that.  Watch his contracts, sure.  Watch his hiring decisions.  But at the draft both he and Gettleman did a pretty good job compared to the rest of the league.  Scouts should get a lot of credit for that too.

I agree about the big picture, and it blows my mind that we haven't had back to back winning seasons by now.  We should have in 2003-2004, and again in 2005-2006, but got the injury bug big.  Even when we won the South three years running we didn't do it.  How does that happen, anyway?

As far as Matt Millen, well I notice you posted this at night, and therefore I'll assume you've had a few.  I don't think even his mother could defend the job he did...

Actually, I remember the link. And no, I don't buy it anymore than I buy any other stat based attempt to spin something around. If you check further on that study, you'll find plenty of silliness included.

Hurney was not a good drafter. Even he himself has admitted that, and explained the reason. He would go BPA in the first round only, then switch to reaching for need every other round.

We also have word from an insider that he had to be talked out of a lot of crazy ideas (including trading a future first for Clausen) by the scouting staff, whom he says he now plans to listen more to (except they tried to talk him out of Brad Kaaya and couldn't).

Hurney just isn't good at talent evaluation, and that's critical for a GM.

The sooner he's gone, the better.

Word from an insider?  Names or it doesn't count.

Hurney was a completely average drafter outside of the first round.  I've said that countless times, and when you measure him against the rest of the league that's what emerges no matter what metric you're using.  Personally, I'm not a big fan of AV, but it's a measure.  Barnwell had a far more complex measure several years ago, it also showed the same thing.  No one is saying that he's perfect, but the draft itself isn't perfect.

I don't care who said what about whom, because for every un-named source you have that says he sucked I can make up one that said he was awesome. At the end of the day, two things are pertinent.  First, we've never had back-to-back winning seasons.  There's your end-all argument against Hurney, and no one is disputing that.  Second, he's not the worst GM in the league at the draft, not by a long shot.  So that's not the issue.

As an aside, good on you for remembering a link that was published yesterday.  I see you got your flux capacitor fixed.
