RR: Cockrell to push Bradberry for #1 CB

I think Bradberry just had an off season. Mainly due to a new defensive coordinator that blitz a lot. It was only his second season so basically he had to learn a new playbook in one offseason and he already doesn’t have but one year of experience. Also he could of had some minor injury he kept to himself. Not saying for certian, just and idea.

Cockrell is a solid CB that fits our system well. He’s smart and has experience. He is very underrated. He could be a decent #1 cb for us, and at the price we are paying him that’s a steal. I think our starting CBs will be great as long as healthy. We have captain and Elder as our nickel corners. As long no injuries occur I think we will be fine.

safety is what worries me. I believe that we should of moved  Worley to safety. I hope we draft Reid from Stanford. There’s a couple other safeties that have potential but I feel Reid can start day one for us.

Oliver is the best CB in the draft from what I have seen. He could be available for us in the 1st round. The problem is that unless Bradberry struggles he won’t get much playing time.

Not saying for certian, just and idea.  Everyone hopes you are right, but you can't go into the season wondering about your #1 CB.  I see Cockrell and Bradberry as a decent combo with question marks; a top rooke and Bradberry and Cockrell is a strong CB tandem (with Munnerlyn and Elder at Nickel).  Do not count Seymour totally out.  He was very young.

There’s a couple other safeties that have potential but I feel Reid can start day one for us.  Worley's attitude and heart were in doubt, and that is not good for a football player.  Searcy is a below average veteran-yet an upgrade over Coleman I would say, and Adams is an experienced vet--just older than dirt.   I think they like Demetrious Cox, by the way.  We shall see.

See bold responses above--you make some interesting points.

Am I the only one who thinks it's bad that a #4 on the worst secondary in the league can come here and challenge for a #1 spot?

That statement implies Cockrell was one of the worst in the league.  I'm not sure that he is.  He was a serviceable starter at the Steelers.  He is clearly an upgrade over Worely.    I do see him competing with Bradberry for the spot.   We could bring in a true #1 but it just seems unlikely at this point.

I think we can trade down and still get a solid safety and or CB.

I believe in Bradberry. I think he just had an off year.

Also so don’t forget we have another nickel back that got injured last year that the coaches really liked and that was Luke Cole.

We dont know what we have in Elder yet and captain in nearing ththe end of his career so it will be interesting to see who can get that nickel role.

I honestly wouldn’t mind us moving Gunter to safety and see if he can learn the position. He has good size. Then again we have been signing no names off the street and starting them at safety for the past 8 years, every hear and now you get a Kurt Coleman or Mike Mitchell that does well with us but it seems every year we need a safety and never address the need. Maybe it stay that way this year as well.

I truly believe players flourish in certain systems we have a system best suited for his skill set. Nnamdi A went from goat to trash (oak-phi) if we get RC to preform at or better then pff grades he had he'll be looked at in a strong light. I believe in pff grading nothing's perfect but you never have a trash player rated high the all pro and all pff teams are very similar.

  • Cockrell played 97.8 percent of snaps last season as he started every game at cornerback. His 79.1 overall grade was second highest among the Steelers’ cornerbacks behind William Gay’s 82.9.
  • The 26-year-old cornerback played 633 coverage snaps last season, the most of any Steelers defender, and allowed the second-lowest passer rating when targeted with 90.0. But he was susceptible to the deep ball, allowing a 101.3 passer rating on go routes last season, the highest on the team

prior to his trade we need to keep that safety over top and we're good money. But I see why he's gonna challenge JB he's a great fit for the Rivera typical scheme so if he goes from a number four to number one I'll say that was key in identifying a player who would excel in our system kudos to the staff.

Good points across the board.  Gunter at S is a thought I had, but I promoted the Worley to S noise--did not want to sound like I am on a CB to S campaign.
