Shaq on Charlotte: "Coach Needs to be Fired"

Just said it on Inside the NBA.  They showed Monk's dunk against the Bulls and then briefly discussed how he didn't get any PT all year and the highlight was made possible because he finally has started to get some burn.  Shaq then asked Zeke if Monk looked like a bust to him, and Zeke said no.  So, Shaq then said, "Coach needs to be fired.  Coach needs to be fired...  Kid needs to be on the court."  Probably worth pointing out that Shaq hates SVG, and Clifford was a SVG assistant for many years, so maybe there is something there, but regardless, his point stands.

It's very rare that a former player/coach/exec speaks on a current player/coach/exec's job, so to have Shaq say that on a national broadcast is telling, AND NEEDED.  I'm tired of hearing people, especially pundits and former pros, make excuses for Clifford.  He has proven to be a below average coach time and time again, and one of the biggest issues in his ineptitude as a coach has been his inability to play the right players at the right time.  Monk sitting all year until we were completely out of the hunt is completely inexcusable.  I'm tired of Clifford's mediocre bullshit and wasting away our best assets because he can't fuging coach.  I hope Kupchak's first move as new GM is canning his sorry ass and may Malik average 20 ppg next season!  It's a irreversible shame that his rookie season was wasted.

Yup, I haven't been a fan of his for a while and after this year I think it's pretty obvious he's an issue.      With the talent this team has, it should have performed much better this year.    Howard came in and played amazing this year and that was supposed to be the missing part.        He's basically another Fox/Rivera mediocre coach honestly, but Charlotte seems to be OK with these type of middle of the road guys.      But who would be better?

I'm hoping the new GM comes in and changes things up.

I really like Clifford. I think he will end up being a good coach for another team. But he isn't what this team needs right now, and he royally screwed up this year by not playing Bacon and Monk more minutes.

We've needed to blow this team up for almost three years now but we just keep kicking the can down the road.

I will say that I am more worried about us hiring Kupchak than I am with us hiring a new coach.

I'm a fan of Clifford and I guarantee that he will find a job quickly if he wants another gig. However, if he were to get fired, I would totally understand.

The NBA is a players league and the one season Clifford has the luxury of a competent 8 man rotation, he won 48 games. He also took a team to the playoffs in his first season with a poorly constructed roster.

Clifford isn't without fault, he isn't perfect. The problem is I do not know who we can get that is better than Clifford.

What respectable coach wants to coach this team when Michael Jordan has proven time and time again he doesn't have a single clue what he's doing when he decides that he wants to draft someone?

Let's be honest, that's probably the first time Shaq has watched the Hornets in any capacity this season.

The game has passed Clifford by.  I've heard countless times what a great coach Clifford is and how he would be hired almost immediately if he became available.  Based on his performance here, I don't really know how/why that would happen.  I couldn't care less if he gets hired somewhere else, but we need to give him a one-way ticket out of town.  GTFO.

i think we should hire @rhyslloyd as the hornets next head coach....heard he has a nasty J...might could teach MKG how to shoot

Coach Cliff is a great coach. I think he has a great philosophy, but we didn't draft or trade for players that fit his system at all.

Coach Cliff is all about defense and 2-way players. On this roster, the only player that truly fits that description is Kemba and Batum (not this years Batum).

Our roster doesn't fit Cliff's style and since he hasn't shown the ability to adjust his system around the players that we have that is the reason that he should be fired.

Kemba, Monk, MKG, Bacon, Cody, Lamb, Frank = Probably excel in a high paced running offense

WHG, Cody, Kemba, Monk = Excel in pick and roll

Dwight, Batum = Post and half court offense

Everyone said the same thing about John Fox when he left the Panthers - he would get another job immediately somewhere else.  Well, he did.  And the same flaws showed up at his new jobs too until he finally fizzled out of the league slowly.  It's time to move on from Clifford.  He is like Fox in that he wasted a talented rookie all season to play a terrible vet like MCW in mostly losing causes.

This year made it clear the team has to get rid of Clifford and Batum in order to move forward.

The prez is gonna want his own guy and will want to create a particular squad. Also...Cho’s work will get replaced and we need to unload some contracts.

I’d dangle a Frank-Batum-future 2nd combo for a slightly less terrible of a contract on a team wanting to get rid of a guy. Not Deng or Parsons please. Maybe like Mo Harkless or Thad Young after this season.

The problem is we’ve relied on Marvin Williams, MKG, Cody Zeller, and Nic Batum to be the starting firepower for this team.  Monk ain’t gonna save that.  Drafting and FA work has been poo here forever, but let’s just clean house and let Mitch rebuild it.  Clifford is a stubborn mule.

WTF are you talking about Monk is already a bigger offensive threat than any of those guys.

What I’m saying professor is that we’ve built a terrible team for years, Monk doesn’t save us from that regardless of how many threes he knocks down.  We’ve drafted horribly forever and Cliff has stuck to the guys Cho has given him.  I do think Cliff should go to get rid of that veteran bias and get a new coaching philosophy in here to give Monk and Bacon and future picks the opportunity to contribute.

    • KC has a very good defense this year. It is 5th overall. Yes, still worse than last year, but their offense is considerably worse. Their passing D may be their "weakness" but they still allow fewer than 20 ppg. BY completed several deep passes yesterday, and he was able to threaten downfield in ways he didn't seem capable of before the benching. I'm not necessarily worried about his ability to connect deep anymore. What to me was impressive was that he did all this without a run game. We used the pass to set up what little running success we had. Wild.
    • Solid and fair assessment.   I will say, one of the big things I noticed yesterday was that he wasn't shy to step up into the pocket in the face of pressure.  He's trusting the IOL.  And they took care of Chris Jones yesterday.  We had clean pockets but also good success rate vs. pressure which just hasn't been the case with Bryce.   If he has more confidence the OL gets it done and he can navigate and step up for throws, that's huge.  It's one of the biggest things that's held him back.  He was previously bailing quickly and just too easily throwing away or making dead plays.     He was finding his 2nd to 3rd reads within structure/without bailing in the pocket.  That was nice to see, as much concern I have with him.  And the overall limitations will always be there. Time to back it up this week against the Bucs.
    • Suddenly the Cowgirls look like our best chance for a win remaining. I think the Bucs are playing better than the Falcons of late.  Our lone game versus the dirty birds is in the ATL where we always struggle.  The Cardinals are marginally better than I thought they would be. We are not beating the Eagles, they are starting to roll. I'm saying two at most, next week at home versus the Bucs and the Cowgirls.
