There are no investments with guarantees .. he made a poor choice and its his fault alone. No one forced him to buy horribly expensive jewelry.

I recently bought an engagement ring and I have to say, the diamond business is one of the shadiest and needlessly complex I've ever seen. Cut, clarity, carat...blah blah blah. It depreciates pretty much the moment you buy it and there is an incredible amount of markup. I played like 4 different jewelers against each other and felt like I got a good deal. At the end of the day I think the jeweler is actually in the right here. If you're dumb enough to pay $8m for a ring, you're either lazy, dumb, or both.
