It's funny how our modern era works.  Complain about something until it gets taken away, and then complain that it was taken away. It's almost like our society is stuck in kindergarten.

Men see cheerleading as degrading. Women see sexualization of their body as empowering.

Catch 22.

Well they did sign up for it...... and that's a fair assessment. The point with that comment is that they did know what was required of the role.

Now with your comment in bold above, you are being just the same as everyone by assuming they are incapable of empathy. There are very valid points being made in this thread from both ends, but to say one is non empathetic is counter productive to your primary argument.

Putting yourself in someone's shoes would mean you'd understand how they feel about a subject. no? What's the definition of empathy? "the ability to understand and share the feelings of another."

So, within one post you knocked others for not being empathetic while demonstrating zero empathy..........

You’re right, in that I did exactly what I accused you of. No problem admitting when I’m wrong.

Now, back to my original statement. Just because someone does something doesn’t mean we shouldn’t fight to make that something better.

Respect here! Thanks, AggieLean.

But that is the point. It's the entertainment industry. While it's not right or moral this is the game. I worked in NYC for 2 years in this business and I'd never go back. Editors getting paid poo money for the "chance" to work for a big company. Models blowing photographers for an opportunity to be put on their IG and get noticed.

This is the world we live in. It's not a moral issue it's an economical one. Having experienced this first hand it hits home. But again, we know full well how this operates going into it and yet we do it anyway, myself included. I'd love to see a change but I just don't see it happening. Perhaps I've become jaded.

Disclaimer: I never blew a photographer nor has a model blown me.

So, let me ask you this question. Do you think there needs to be change within the industry? Does there need to be change within the entertainment world? I see your 2nd paragraph, so I see you want change. So my question is, when do we move past “this is the world we live in” and start really trying to change the world we live in? I ask myself the same question, because I know I’m not perfect and contribute to some of the wrong in this world.

I think you’re right in that it’s an economical issue, but I also believe it’s moral as well. I also know it’s a situation where you have a lot of people who don’t want to see change.

this message board has been largely hostile towards the perspectives of women at numerous times while I've been a member. I've noticed it, and to my detriment I've not really made much of an effort to confront it, mostly out of despair and a lack of desire to bicker online more than absolutely necessary. gonna try to act differently in this situation and say it's absurd and many posters in this thread should be ashamed of themselves.

it's not at all surprising that a discussion about the workplace environment for cheerleaders has simultaneously devolved into garbage while that garbage has been laid at the feet of the woman brave enough to post about it in the first place. I'm just sorry that she has to put up with this crap. I don't stand for it at all and welcome perspective from her. also, she's absolutely correct about the ridiculousness of the excerpts she posted. and good on her for bringing it up.

What do cheerleaders get in return? National exposure on television and the opportunity to meet and rub elbows with people they might never meet or associate with. They get into games for free and have access to players and perks along the way.

Why do they only get water or breaks when we are on offense? Because the stadium is supposed to be quiet. The rest of the time they are cheering and trying to whip up fan support. Why must they change offsight? No locker room facilities for them. Why do they have a code of ethics regarding behavior. Anyone remember our 2 cheerleaders in Tampa if I remember correctly

Of course I'd like to see a change. This isn't a "boys will be boys" argument for entertainment it's just the nature of the business. How do you go about making a change in culture like that? The demand for the jobs wont change. People will always want fame and fortune. If you have suggestions on how to overhaul the entertainment industry I'd love to hear them. Maybe one day I'd go back.

Being a cheerleader isn’t their primary job.  Most , if not all, other have jobs.

I can definitely confirm this. My old coworkers daughter is a member of the hornets cheer squad but works in insurance (if she still does) in a big corp office.

Quote
As of 2016, six teams do not have cheerleading squads: Buffalo Bills, Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, Green Bay Packers, New York Giants, and the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Packers do, however, use a collegiate squad to cheer at home games.

Get rid of cheerleaders altogether. The diehards don't care and it's just a weirdly exploitative and intrusive occupation.

Are you sure the Huddle is "largely hostile"? Or are they just yelling louder than everyone else. For the most part this thread has good points from both sides. Also OP while bringing up a good point has been the most hostile contributor in this thread. Not defending the jackasses just playing devil's advocate.
