Which is dumber: The bench press or the Wonderlic?

Recommended Posts

Blaine Gabbert & Ryan Fitzpatrick had high Wonderlic scores.  Dan Marino & Jim Kelly had low ones.  That should tell you all you need to know right there.

You can test out of the roof but turn into a mental midget once heavy bodies are flying around.  The bench is more closely related but still nothing is an end all be all.  Lots and lots of film comes close, but even then some guys can completely blindside you.

The point of the combine is to allow comparisons between players from different conferences and levels of competition. None of the individual drills or tests are better for every player and every position. The 40 yard dash might be irrelevant for a linemen but might impact a DB or running back up or down in the draft depending on the result. The bench press might be important for a linemen  but not for a quarterback. The wonderlic seems to measure quickness of mental response, ability to think logically, etc. Abilities which might not be that relevant to positions requiring mostly athleticism but could be useful to players who need to be more cerebral.
