Where are you from?

My sister did one of the DNA tests (I can't remember which one) and she sent me the screenshot of the results.

Apparently my DNA originates from:

Great Britain 55%
Europe West 24%
Scandinavia 8%
Europe South 7%

Low Confidence regions include:

Ireland/Scotland/Wales 3%
Iberian Peninsula 1%
Finland/Northwest Russia <1%
Europe East <1%

So yeah, I guess I'm as white as they come.

I've said here before that my direct lineages on my mothers side has been traced back to a German immigrant and early settler of Philadelphia in the earlier years of the American Revolution. He was a surgeon and crossed the Delaware with George Washington and was one of the top surgeons/doctors at Valley Forge. He was a pioneer of the smallpox vaccine.

That's my mom's side.

On my dad's side, I don't know a whole lot prior to the Civil War era. I do believe that both sides of my family were some of the first non-native people in NC. We also have some native history in there that's been lost in our DNA, I guess.

Also, I got my wife a kit from MyHeritageDNA a while back. Hers came back:

94.1% European (pretty much an even split between the North and West countries and the Iberian Peninsula (she's half Portuguese))

3% Middle Eastern

2.9% African (1.7% West African/Nigerian and 1.2% North African)

I received my DNA results today. I used Ancestry for the research.

41% Irish / Scottish / Welch

31% Scandinavian

13% Western European

8% Spanish / Portugese

3% British

2% Middle Eastern

1% Finnish / Russian

<1% from Southern European

Immigration started prior to 1700s and was over by 1800s.

So I can wear a Viking helmet and a Kilt. Cool.

Kids got me Ancestry on Father's Day discount.

Britain 75%

Finland 3%

NW Russia 3%

S,W,E Europe pretty much the rest.

Makes sense, my dad saw our name in several pages of a London phonebook years ago.

Migration was to western NC starting in 1700. They spread around the region as expected, but interestingly, a bunch of them began to move to Oklahoma in the early 1800's.

My daughter spent a month in Europe. She said of all the countries she visited  she wanted to go back to Ireland above all the rest

We went to Ireland and Scotland back in 2016. I concur with your daughter. wonderful country to visit. Nice people, awesome landscape. Overall just a pleasant atmosphere. I suggest if she does go back, to visit Bray in County Wicklow. So much to do there.

The majority of the business I support in my career is based in Ireland. I agree that everyone I have encountered from Ireland are wonderful people. They really make my job enjoyable. I would love to spend a month there when time permits without the distractions of work.

For those of you have done the ancestry kits, do you feel they are accurate?

I have wanted to do one but never thought it be worth the money. My mom was born in Finland and my dad was born in Germany. As far as we have traced back, both their families just reside in those countries so I have always assumed I was 50% Finnish and 50% German but reading through this thread has increased my curiosity.

The results I received did match much of what I had been told or surmised from known family history. I do not know my biological father so it was interesting. My hair color and texture has always been assumed to be from a some Native American ancestry. Nope. Zero. Apparently the Spanish /Portuguese and possibly Turkish have similar hair characteristics according to the young lady that cuts my hair. I may use another just for comparison.

29% Coastal West African (Senegal, Ghana, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Benin)

26% Nigerian

7% Congolese Bantu

Overall, 85% Sub Saharan African. The other 15% is (10% British/Irish, and 2% Native American).

Also after some digging around, found out my people care along during the beginnings of the 13 colonies.

Guess I’ll go to Nigeria first, then try to hit up the other West African countries.

Never done the DNA kit, but some of my ancestors have been in the US since the 1740's.  My great great whatever grandfather fought with the Delaware Continentals at the battle of Eutaw Springs I think.  Before that, most of them were from England, and a few hundred years before that, some probably migrated from Flanders.
