Mel Kiper Jr mock draft

ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper has released his latest mock draft (ESPN Insider required) and has given the Panthers some desperately needed help in the secondary.

24. Carolina Panthers: Justin Reid, S, Stanford

Reid is another fast riser after the combine, and he stands out on the Stanford tape. He can play in the box or as a deep safety, taking over for Kurt Coleman in the Panthers’ secondary. I think he’s going to play on day one in the NFL and be a key rookie standout wherever he ends up. The Panthers traded for Torrey Smith, but they should still be in the market for an upgrade at receiver.

To be fair that was with Gman at the helm. He never drafted Oline or S high

The Panthers have literally never drafted a safety in the 1st round in the exostence of the franchise. Only two 1st round OTs in the last 20 years.

Historically speaking, our 1st round picks lean very heavily toward DL, LB, and RB.

Possibly the biggest remaining need for the Panthers is free safety; s things stand, the Panthers would likely be forced to chose between starting Colin Jones, converting Ladarius Gunter from corner or rolling the dice on Mike Adams still having the speed to play the free spot and starting new signee Da’Norris Searcy at the strong safety; none of these are particularly encouraging options. Because of that, the Panthers will almost certainly, note the almost, draft a free safety in the first few rounds of the draft to compete for a starting role, and one name that has been floated repeatedly at both the 24th and 55th pick is Justin Reid from Stanford. So what would the Panthers be getting should they select Justin Reid?

Right now, I'm hoping for Hayden Hurst, then trade up in the 2nd for Reid.  Assuming he falls.

Hurst in the 1st? Please no. He'll be 25 before he ever plays a down of NFL football. That puts him at 30 after his rookie contract if he's on a 5 year 1st round contract. You'd basically be drafting a guy who would be on the tail end of his prime by the time his rookie contract is up. Hurst would look really good to me in the 3rd but I don't want him in the 1st or 2nd.

I have always been baffled as to why the team, irrespective of GM or coaching staff, doesn’t invest in the S position more in the impact rounds of the draft.  The one S they drafted high they converted to LB- Thomas Davis.
