My though's on OBJ is this..  he is too much of a risk because there is nothing that could be said that would really shock you about him

OBJ goes for 2000 yards and 20 td in a season

OBJ in the running for league MVP.

OBJ caught high on drugs..

OBJ midget sex tape scandal

OBJ loses mind on field and bashes ref with his helmet

OBJ strangles WR coach on sideline

OBJ strips naked on middle of field.

OBJ holds out for year over contract dispute

etc.....

Nothing would shock me about OBJ.  Mildly suprise.. maybe.. but shock?  Nope.  imo that's too much of a risk for someone who is going to demand a large percentage of our salary cap.

I think the only turn off is the salary

But if the Panthers (and any other team) could win the Super bowl this season because of OBJ i think we would forgive everything on that list:)

Take 89s best years then of his 13 year career then and compare it OBJs first 3.  Bringing up punt return seasons doesn’t really mean anything.

I mean as you said, you would be comparing the best 3 seasons of a HOFer to a rookie/young starter.....and Odell’s numbers wouldn’t be just better.  They would be signicantly better.  Then take 89s headache moments from those seasons and compare them to OBJs.

Smith spent most of his career with a team that threw the ball on average about a hundred and fifty times less per season than OBJ's team.  Its a little easier to get those numbers when you are on a team that throws more.

2005, 2008 and 2011 were Smitty's best years. The only place where you could possibly say that OBJ was "significantly" better is in TDs. He had 10 more. Of course he had approximately 30 more catches...but Smith's yardage was "significantly" better (if you want to play that game). And then what's worrisome about Beckham is the stark dropoff that he's had in average YPC the last couple of seasons.

I highly doubt OBJ is going to continue catching the volume of passes as the Giants become a more efficient offense, and even if he does, that average YPC is going to come decrease. He's not going to be in such a tailor-made, Santa Clause-given position anymore. 89 had his problems for sure, but his craft was always the priority.

Like I said, talk to me in another decade.

OBJ is going to get traded. DG doesn’t believe receivers should be a large sum of the cap. So he’ll get a 1st and 2nd from a team like the Niners or Rams, save the cap money and go get more linemen. Right or wrong...that’s how DG builds his teams.

It would also free him up to do what he wants with the top pick (possibly take a QB), then move back up to get Chubb or stand pat and take another good DL.

DG specifically said you pay touchdown scorers and pass rushers.

It's a difficult comparison because OBJ has the benefit of getting balls from Eli Manning, which you have to admit, who is better than almost every single QB to ever wear a Panthers jersey.

So I did some simple spreed sheeting and put into percentages how much of the passing offense each player was:

Percentage of team

Steve Smith BEST           Receptions Yards TD (Pass)
2011 16 79 1394 17.6 7 25.32% 36.41% 33.33%
2005 16 103 1563 15.2 12 38.29% 44.85% 48.00%
2008 14 78 1421 18.2 6 31.71% 45.00% 40.00%
Total 46 260 4378 17 25
            Receptions Yards TD (Pass)
OBJ
Percentage of Team

2014 12 91 1305 14.3 12 23.76% 30.55% 40.00%
2015 15 96 1450 15.1 13 24.49% 33.36% 36.11%
2016 16 101 1367 13.5 10 26.79% 35.24% 38.46%

What I see is that during Smith's most dominate years (as posted by someone a few pages prior), Smith carried the passing offense far and away more so than OBJ has been asked.  That was Smith's MO his entire career, for better or worse (which is why Gettleman jettisoned him).

Is OBJ a good player?  Sure.  But his situation is much more favorable than 89's ever was.  There's also the intimidation factor that 89 put on dudes.  Everyone knew the ball was coming to him, yet he still dominated the NFL despite lackluster QB play.  There is a rightful stigma around OBJ and his maturity and attitude.  Smith was an absolute hot head who did some DUMB things in his career, but no one disrespected him as a football player (at their own peril!).

Why is OBJ on the block?  Gman has experience removing prima dona receivers in order to get a better result on the field.  It's a complicate equation for sure, but I can see why Gettleman would want to move on from OBJ.

I wouldn't want to pay the trade price or the cash price on OBJ.
