Rashaad Penny vs. Nick Chubb

I know you don't like the idea of a RB in the 2nd, but there is a very good chance both will be gone by our first 3rd round pick.  And since I think there is a  pretty big drop-off after them, we may have no other choice if we fall in love with either.

Oh darn guess we’ll actually have to draft someone else then

Advance football analytic labs has rashad Penny as the best rb

I have Penny as #2 RB. Guy has good/great speed in pads for 220lb +. GREAT wiggle too, made the most guys miss last year.

If you liked Hunt going into the draft, can't denied Penny is a better version.

The knocks are where he played and 1 really big year, not known as a receiver. Not a bowling ball either that moves the pile like stew could, Chubb, or Freeman. With CMC on board, Penny to me is not a complementary guy to CMC. Bo Scarbough, Freeman, Ballage are 2nd fiddles in short yardage . If it's an open competition at RB1, I would draft Penny.

Since we have shown little too no interest in any of the RB’s on the FA market, I am beginning to think we will target one early.  Now, the first round is far too rich…especially after spending a high first on one last year.  However, I definitely see one taken with our second or one of our third round picks (I know many don’t think we should use a second on a RB, but the way this team values the position, I think they will want to get their guy rather than wait for whomever is left)

Anyway, the two most likely candidates IMO are Rashaad Penny and Nick Chubb (I don’t think there is a chance in Hell that either Michel or Guice will be there for our second round pick).  Both seem destined for that mid-second to mid-third range to be taken.  So, if we really want either, there is a very good chance both could be off the board by the time we pick in the third…particularly with the resurgence of the running game throughout the league.

So, I decided to look at some clips from Draft Breakdown to see how they compare to each other.   Anyway, here goes!

Vision:  Both have good vision, but Penny’s seems a little better.  He was very quick to diagnose the hole and explode through it.  Chubb also seems to have decent vision, but it takes him a fraction longer to identify the hole than Penny.

Advantage: Penny

Power:  Both do a good job of breaking tackles and running through arm tackles, but Chubb just seems to be better at moving the pile when the defense swarms to him.

Advantage: Chubb

Speed:  Penny has a clear advantage here.  Forget the combine, in pads Penny just has more explosion and plays much faster than Chubb does…particularly his short area speed.  When Penny sees a hole, he just explodes through it, while it takes Chubb a fraction of a second longer, which leads to some holes closing up on him before he gets there.

Advantage Penny

Quickness:  Again, I think Penny is better at changing direction at the point of attack and is quicker at bouncing it outside when there’s nothing up the middle.

Advantage: Penny

Blocking:  Neither had many opportunities to block in the games I saw, but the few times they did, Chubb seems more comfortable at it.  Chubb did a much better job of squaring up and impacting the defender, while the most you could say about Penny is that he tried to get in the way.  IMO, Penny’s big problem is that he uses virtually no blocking technique.  I don’t know if that’s because he doesn’t have the want to, or if it’s because nobody ever really taught him since he was always the feature back.  Either way, we all know how Rivera likes his RB’s to be able to block, so Penny really needs to show a desire to learn to be a consideration here.

Advantage: Chubb

Receiving: Neither had many opportunities to catch balls, but Penny did get quite a bit more than Chubb.  For the most part, Penny worked well out of the backfield and caught the ball well as an outlet, but I wouldn’t expect him to line up in the slot or outside like CMC.  Generally, he looks to be a decent receiver.  Chubb, on the other hand, went out on a few routes, but didn’t have any balls thrown to him, so, I couldn’t get a real gauge on him as a receiver.

Advantage:  Penny

Bottom line, both are good backs, but as long as you don’t plan on keeping them in to block very often (at least until they learn better technique), Penny seems to be the much better runner.  In fact, I could see him as this year’s Kareem Hunt.

Penny is not Kareem hunt. Kareem basically led the entire world in broken tackles and yards after contact. I like your write up but penny is not Kareem hunt. Penny is more of a quicker deangelo Williams with no evidence of being able to break tackles. Show me footage of penny breaking tackles and you can claim Kareem hunt but he is no Kareem hunt he is a finesse runner that lacks the power Kareem hunt has.

A big question mark I've heard about San Diego State RBs is that they have all this production in college, but very little in the pros.  I forget if it was MMQB or Rotoworld pod cast a couple of week ago.

Anyone else hear about that?  Or do you think it's an overblown issue?

If they are both there in the second round I would probably go Penny.

Ultimately though I hope we are smart about whoever we draft and don't fall in "love" with a certain player and do something stupid like trade up for one.

I think you should look at which players you like and where in the draft you are willing to take them.

At certain points in the draft I would consider different guys.

Pick 24 - Guice (although I'm not crazy about picking a RB in first)

Pick 55 - Chubb or Penny

Pick 85 or 88 - Freeman or Johnson

Pick 161 - Scarbrough or Ballage (I could see both of them going in the 4th)  could trade down with one of our thirds

Hurney will take the best player available, all the thoughts of the huddle be damned.

with that said he has shown aggression to jump up, and this year being so aggressive in free agency don’t be surprised with a win now attitude it looks like 2008.

so If he wants a receiver or a tackle or defensive end he may jump up to that best player available.

no matter what I expect a lot of bitching

Penny averaged 3.32 yards per carry after being contacted behind or at the line of scrimmage.  That was first in college football.  By comparison Barkley averaged .46 which was 57/58.

According to the article he also lead the league in broken tackles.

Both stats would have me believe he has the ability to run with power.

Usually that’s one of the best telling stats.

Weve seen backs like Trent Richardson get all the hype but they had a Dallas offensive line in college and did no work.

then they suck— can’t find a hole, can’t make a hole.

Then they can’t pass block— so worthless.
