Defensive End: Where things stand

the pressure wasn't always there

I think the biggest reason is due to us blitzing so much. As weird as this paradox sounds, it is possible for blitzing to have a negative effect on pressure when it's predictable and easily countered by the offense.

For example, against the Vikings, 5 out of 6 of our sacks on the day came from when we rushed four rather than blitzed. When we typically blitz, our front four has little space to adjust and maneuver around when it gets picked up by the offense, who then have a counter built in to alleviate the blitz.

I know our front four is better than it was under Wilks. I hope Washington brings out the best from them.

As far as what's on the roster/team currently, I'm a huge fan of Odaba and have been rooting for Cox, and patiently waiting for Hall. I'd love for us to cut ties with Horton, he got paid good money and is inconsistent as hell, never should have gotten paid what he did, just taking g up a roster spot that one of the other 3 I mentioned could have. But again, that's my opinion from my observations.

It would be nice to get a serious young all around DE candidate in the mix because next year you are going to need him badly. It's not a position you should be messing around with since the cost of even a decent one is going to be high. As much as I want a young safety it's much easier to find a good veteran safety than DE.

1.2 million for a 28 year old solid depth player is not getting overpaid at all. He had 5.5 sacks last year in a limited rotational role, and has always been a very solid run stopper.

I think we're thin and don't have a lot of confidence in our edge rushers outside of Peppers.  Addison looks good on paper, but CJ once looked good and then fell off a cliff around the same age.  I would love it if Hall emerged as an every-down player, but I really don't see one on the roster.  Overall the line looks good but that's because of the interior.

I think Hurney will be looking to shore this unit up however he can.  The problem here is that the draft class is thin and at this point the best remaining free agent is Kony Ealy.
