Breaking down Cockrell as a Zone CB

Recommended Posts

IMO, the Cockrell signing gives us 2 solid #2CBs. Both still young enough to have time to improve. Could we use a #1? Probably. Can we go to war with these 2? Absolutely.

Top of my list is the best FS we can get. Get that kid, and we have a shot at a really good Defense.

With the next 2 picks I would take the combination of TE, and CB. I say combination, because I can't make up my mind which way the value works out to our best advantage. I think we need talent at TE a bit more than at CB. But a 2nd round CB could make a run at Bradberry and Cockrell. Decisions, decisions.

That last 3rd goes toward the best RB left. With this class, there is a real good chance we can still get a kid that can produce right out of the gate.

As is, I believe we can be competitive. If the draft falls right? We can be a dangerous team. Especially if Norv, and Cam hit it off.

I think adding a top-tier running back is more important then a tight in at this moment and so combination of running back and corner is more Likely

This class is chock full of talented RBs. No need to go after one too early.

But then again, it does come down to how you rank your needs. And how you plan to address them.

Ideally, I would take the best TE available at #24. But as we really need to solidify that FS position. I would much rather use that 1st and get one of the best FS in the draft.

Then use the next two picks on TE, and CB. Where there is still good talent available. RB can hopefully wait until that 2nd 3rd.

That's just how it is. If you don't see it that way. Well... I just don't know what to tell ya. lol

At that point I'm not so sure there will be a safety on the board worth a 1st, so hopefully Hurndawg has OG/DE/TE/CB also queued up and ready to go.  If the Hernandez kid, OG from UTEP, is still waiting there at 24, do not pass GO, do not collect $200, just turn in the damn name.  Hell, if Hernandez is gone, I'd go with the OG/OT/C from Georgia, Wynn, almost over any other position if he is still there.  Hernandez is likely the most dominating OG in the draft.  Wynn is true 1st round value that can play any position on your OL and could play OG for you this year and next hear slide to the middle to replace Kalil.  And, since he's also played OT a lot in college he can back-up those positions.

I am OK with the CB tandem right now--but I would add one late (deep draft) to compete with Seymour.  I think Cockrell eliminated a need in the draft.  I was curious about your feelings about LG--not mentioned.

1. Justin Reid FS, Stanford.  I think we are in a position to trade back about 5 spots and still take Reid. I am assuming we would get a fourth to do so, so I am adding a 4th rounder below.

2. TE Mike Gesicki, Penn St.  Look at his production and combine numbers.

3.  OL Tyrell Crosby, Oregon.  He was excellent at Oregon, allowing no sacks and no hits in 2017. Very athletic.  Only 6-4, so he could play tackle, guard, and might make a better Center.  In other words, he can play all positions on the line of scrimmage.  I would move Moton to LG and develop Crosby as depth while working him as a center for 2019.  And if Moton is not an option at LG, Crosby would be nice there.

3. RB Kalen Ballage Arizona St.  6-2, 230 and runs a 4.46.  I suspect he can tote the rock between the tackles.

4. (trade) Brandon Parker, OT NC A&T Needs a year to develop, but he has long arms, good footwork.  Impressed at Senior Bowl.  High character kid from good family (I know his dad very well). Local scouts predict he will start in the NFL.

5. Siran Neal, SS Jacksonville State.  A college CB that loves to tackle--projects to a S in the bigs.  Imagine a SS with some cover skills.  (Torn between Neal and Marcus Allen here, fwiw).

6. Isaac Yiadom, CB.  Big and ran good time at combine.  Had  a good senior season.

7s.  BPA

I'm not excited by the combine but each to their own. I enjoy the senior bowl more- last year Hunt and Kamara excelled there and were promptly ignored. Gesicki was completely anonymous there while Goedart looked impressive and Gesicki's performance strikes me as a red flag. I have Gesicki pegged as a mirage.

We can definitely “go to war” with the corners we have now... the question is can we be competitive in the South enough to win it? I’m saying no, so drafting a corner is important.

We have two solid CBs. Can you say the same about that S position? So even though we may still need to take a chance on a CB, we defiantly need to look at the S position.

Do you trust Cap? If not, we need to also look at RB. Throw in TE as well.

That is four positions. And we have 4 of the top 100 picks. I am just glad I don't have to figure out how to go about getting this done.

The production at Penn St was there.  Not sure the Senior bowl provides enough chemistry between QB and TE/WR to judge either, but I see your point.

I think we are looking for both a FS and SS--Searcy and Adams are not exactly cornerstones.  CB?  We are better.  Bradberry disappointed last year, but we should be in a better situation last year.  When you blitz nearly every down, you put zone CBs at a disadvantage.  Bradberry was usually locked on the #1 WR.  Tough sledding.

I'm sorry. But this is not the year to throw high draft picks at the lines. You can get quality G play almost anywhere in the draft. Plus we have other options as well.

We need skill position players, especially at DB. You can probably throw in TE, and RB. When you need athletes as badly as we do. You have to get them higher in the draft.

Now, if Hurndog happens to bring in a FS that can solidify our backfield. Then you can have your guard. Otherwise, you are going to have to get him later in the draft.

In most years, I would be with you. This just happens to be one of those years that bucks the trend.

Do we have a rating on how many of those running backs can also pass block and pick up blitz?

stewarts true value was that. Norvs offense traditionally with those downfield throws require someone to block effectively.

thats who we are looking at, narrow those down.

so I agree with the tightend FS, but a draft full of running back prospects has how many that can block like Stewart did?

    • I'm still not touching Hunter He again said the other day that he plans on playing both sides of the ball in the NFL.  If he is allowed to do that, he won't be as good on either side as his potential and he's going to have serious injury issues and have a short career.  If he's not allowed to do it, I think he's going to become a problem when the team isn't winning as he's going to feel him not being used on both sides of the ball is why. He's being coddled in that environment with Deion and I think it's doing a disservice to him to prepare him for life in the NFL where your coach isn't a 2nd father to you, to where you can just walk into his locker room and steal his shoes like Hunter does to Deion.
    • He’s a tad behind them. Around 15ish of 32 starters in the league. He’s well ahead of a lot of guys. Tua, Bryce, Cousins (present), Rodgers (current), Devito/Jones, Minshew, Russ (current), Watson, Smith, Carr, T Laws deep ball is weak as poo IMO, there’s plenty. And it’s not like everyone is ripping 60+ers. The key component is if you can rip and maintain velocity of the 30-40 yarders which he does super well. Legit every report out there from Brugler to PFF to PFN document him as good/above average arm strength.  Eye test tells me it’s pretty much that as well, slightly above average.
    • 6-10 carries for  35-45 yds and 3-5 catches for 15-25 would be great.
