The Blame Game (Hurney)

Everyone blames Hurney, but the turth is that ......The coaches and scouts decides who they want and dont want and they give the information to Hurney he then tries to figure out if we can afford them considering how the budget is allocated.   Some moves are obvious but , lets be honest you think hurney was just sitting at home and said hey lets sign POE......lol no his team decided POE would be an upgrade over STAR and recommended that player and hurney got with his cap guy and got an offer together and sent to POE and he accpeted. Hurney is not the driving force he is just a figure head. in fact he is out traveling right now at prodays......stay woke! carry on with your day!

I'm going to come out front and say that I honestly have hardly any issues with what Hurney is doing this go round. He's been solid. We'll see if things pan out well but so far so good in my opinion.

And yes, it is a team/organizational decision to sign/draft players based on scheme fit and personnel on hand.

However Hurney has no background in scouting, and that's where his weaknesses truly shine. When a coach or scout says that player A needs to stay on the team and will be an asset, it's up to Hurney to evaluate the talent of said player and determine if he is worth a contract or not. He needs to be able to tell the coach or the scout "No, there are other options available that won't hurt us as much" and it's that shortcoming that lead to the big contracts for Godfrey, Anderson, Beason, Williams, Delhomme, Stewart, Mare, etc. etc. He was less calculated and more emotional in those decisions.

Now, how much of this is JR's doing, and how much of it was Hurney's doing? That's another question we don't really have the answer for, but it seems like Hurney was always content doing JR's biddings and being his little cuck butt boy. In my opinion, that's why Gettleman got the boot.

Either way, Hurney 2.0 isn't as horrendous as I remember 1.0, and I'm cautiously optimistic with his moves thus far, and that is saying something coming from me considering Hurney was a 4 letter word in my vocabulary and that I use the phrase "I really Hurney'd that" whenever I fug up.

So there's that

Um.. you must be new around here.

It's always someone ...

It rotates, because most people on here being fans will always think "if we had ( ... )we would be a dynasty".

Sometimes it's truth, sometimes it's false, but like most things it's all about perspective/bias.

For instance , much of the Hurney hate had to do with the management of the cap.  However if you were here around that time, other than the Jake Delhomme and Charles Godfrey deals, everyone was excited that Hurney was able to "keep" our players.  Contrast that with Gettlemen who is loved by many, who kept us under the cap, but in the end made some questionable moves.

Sometimes it's a coach,  you have someone like Chud who some felt was the best OC ever, he left before he can be hated, and Shula who was hated before he started, probably stayed to long.

Sometimes it's a player,  Tre' Boston was blamed for everything bad that happened in the secondary whether it was his fault or not.  then you have Amini Silatolu who has sucked except for his first 8 games, but people continued to give him passes until it finally clicked.

If you read enough, it's the same people who post argument after argument either 4 or against.  Most people here are "woke".  It's just they don't post as much.

I see your points..... i think he just trying to protect the comp picks so we looking for certain players who dont mess with that.

I have been surprised by Hurney thus far. Breeland wasn’t his fault and his signings have been good. I really like Poe and I think he is an upgrade over Star. Torrey will be solid here and Searcy will be a good backup. What worries me is the draft, Hurney hasn’t particularly done well outside the first round. He has changed so maybe he will listen to staff more this time..who knows

So there's that

Pretty solid take.

And yeah, coaches set the system. They can say "we need a run stuffing DT" or "a blocking tight end" or some such. Then it's the job of the college scouts or the pro personnel people and such to look at available players and the GM makes the final choice. It's pretty common for them to work with the head coach on the final choice as well.

Given this, yeah it's very helpful for the GM to have some kind of personnel background or at least talent in that area. Hurney has neither (and a penchant for crazy ideas) so the hope is that the coaches and support staff do enough to compensate for that. Of course, the GM is also the guy who chooses the personnel staff, so you have to factor that in as well.

In the end, it is a collaborative effort, but as with all such things, ultimate responsibility falls on the guy in charge.
