So no big improvement so far....

A wash between Star vs Poe (Poe is a slight upgrade) ,weaker on the oline without Norwell no doubt. The WR position is an upgrade without adding any big names i guess,, but the safety and corner positions has not been improved at all.

So after the bulk of FA passes by, a bunch of lateral moves seems to be the result. Looks like they are depending on the draft for a running back, safety, cornerback, tight end, and a guard. How many picks will actually be starters this year and provide real production? They may bring in 3rd tier guys left in FA......JAGS

Shh you're not allowed to have this opinion on these boards. You'll be accused of having an anti-Hurney agenda and derailing all conversations. So...

WE GOT NORV TURNER!!!! GO SIGN UP FOR THE GIANTS MESSAGE BOARD!!! JERRY RICHARDSON BROUGHT THIS TEAM TO THE CAROLINAS AND IS GREAT AND HURNEY WAS NEVER A BAD GM, JERRY MADE HIM DO EVERYTHING, BUT JERRY IS STILL GREAT!!!!

We sure have swung and missed a lot. Having our ownership situation up in the air and thus, having our future front office and GM situations essentially up in the air as well definitely puts us at a disadvantage on the free agent market unless we're clearly the best financial offer. No one with other good options wants to sign with a team knowing the guy who brought them in very well may be gone in a year.

Yeah does suck. The sports team I'm most passionate about and invest a ton of time and money on has gotten considerably worse and are wasting the prime years of their franchise QBs career. Also sucks that they rival the browns as the biggest dumpster fire in the NFL from the ownership down.

I'm actually not too worried about guard. I loved me some Norwell as much as the next guy, he absolutely handled his poo, but we have Larsen under contract with 15 starts (at center) over the last 2 seasons, and resigned Van Roton for 2 more years. He actually looked promising in the few games he got a chance in last year. Both of these are drop offs from Norwell, but I think we're a long way from desperate. And that's not including Moton, who is smart, talented, can play guard if needed.

Everything else you said I 100% am on board with.

I just don't understand what people don't understand.

1) Just because a free agent signed with another team doesn't mean we didn't offer him something. Hell, in some cases, we could have offered more, but that player wanted to be a starter or liked the other organization slightly better. Nothing we can do about that.

2) The Free Agency class this year was absolutely garbage. There were slim pickings and teams were throwing around stupid money on potential. You want a Sammy Watkins or the Honey Badger? You better have money. That's one thing we don't have, so who are you going to cut and/or let go to make room for them? Sure, we could let go of Kalil, but that still wouldn't solve all of our other problems.

3) Our secondary would have gotten better with Breeland. There was no way for us to know that a cut on his foot would turn into an infection. Sucks, but that's life. Hell, how do you think he feels? He could have been $24 million richer.

4) There's been like 4 teams who have made a splash in FA. You know why? They had money and they had to pay a lot for average guys that probably won't help the team that much.

There is no Hurney vs Gettleman. It's the state of the NFL right now. Hopefully, we kill it in the draft and there will be more Free Agents available after the draft is complete. Just because we haven't made a flashy move in the first two weeks of Free Agency doesn't mean that we won't.

Be patient. Stop bitching. It's early.

anyone else feel a little jilted with free agents turning us down?  Because of the change of ownership, maybe?

Other teams either have more cash or more prominent roles for these guys. I think we're an appealing franchise to play for and it's the only reason we're in the running at all.

About the same as before all this activity.  I really don’t expect much to change until after this coming season.  We are about an 8-8 team and I’d be shocked if anyone we draft has any real immediate impact.

its an even year for the Panthers and we have a pattern of performing poorly in even years. that said... i truly believe Norv Turner will be a boon for this team and we may buck the trend and win 10 games.

    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
    • Well, we got our answer on Army today.
    • Not a chance the SEC could compete with the NFL.  In the large cities that are not in the Southeast, (LA, NYC, Chicago, SF) College football is an afterthought.
