Saxy Quick Takes: Off Saison Edition

Quick Takes:

-We got this Poe dude.  Our DL looks studly for next season. Check.

-Our secondary has Bradberry, Elder, Munnerlyn, Seymour.  I don't find that particularly awful.  Two proven commodities, a new guy we saw last season outplay Worley and Elder is basically like a new draft pick going into the year.  Really no need to freak out right now.

-Safety is a concern but our team doesn't value them.   I can see a mid-to-late rounder spent on one or maybe two.  Adams is back

-OL: Kalil-Moton-Kalil-Turner-Williams; yes, Moton is capable at both G and T...and we've got LarsenVan Roten! at the least as depth.  Can see a draft pick somewhere on the line, not mission critical

-Weapons: Pretty straightforward and still the most important; we would like a 3-down style back and hopefully another WR.  It would be nice to have a TE2. 3 picks

--

So what am I saying? Screw the BPA philosophy (for the most part). Let's target:

OL, WR, RB, TE, S, CB

That's 6 spots.  This draft we've got a 1, 2, 3, 3, 5, 6, 7

7 spots to grab basically 6 parts.  You can't strike gold with them all, but this is very manageable and without Breeland, we actually have around $9-11 mil in cap (range due to Peppers' mysterious numbers).

Plenty of mediocre guys in the marketplace and can now grab the best fitting FA with a bit of cap to spare.  The only issue is that we're pretty much the same team as last season until the draft which is why I sense the uneasiness around these parts.

What exactly would qualify in your mind as "particularly awful"? Because, that's right there is it.

What I'm trying to say is really at the end of the OP:

We're pretty much the same team as last season minus Norwell and Dickson

Star-->Poe (Carry), Torrey Smith will produce more than Shepard.

No other impact losses.  So, that makes our next moves and draft super critical even more so than in years' past.  Hurney has a lot on his plate upcoming and he better fuggin' produce.

Fier!!

@jumpman910 Fair enough but he's our CB1 and not moving so that's a piece in place.  Between Captain and Corn, you've got our NB (plus flakes...cereal joke).  It's that other guy on the outside we need.  Breeland was exciting for a few days but it is what it is (Foxy).  We can find another guy.

While Seymour IS a downgrade from Worley, it isn't as steep. Both were low-end CB2s with Seymour clearly needing more experience. I think he does have more upside than Worley fwiw. Seymour could be fair if he works on his craft.

However, we definitely need to address cornerback sooner rather than later. Would like to see if we could draft CB Jackson in the first round, followed by Reid? in the second and a solid OG in the third.

    • Why are you so fixated on yards? Even if yards were a good judge of QB play, his low yardage totals in some of those games were partly a function of drops (looking at you Xavier Leggette…).  I’m not advocating that Bryce was elite for the last half of last year, but the eye test certainly supported high level QB play for large stretches. He made a lot of high difficulty, put it on the money/drop in the bucket throws. He converted on 3rd and 4th down, kept drives moving, and put the team in position to win games. And it’s not on him that the defense blew it late after he led game tying drives, Leggette dropped a game winning TD, or Chuba fumbled the ball in OT. We could have finished the season close to .500 with wins against 3 playoff teams including KC and Philly during that stretch largely due to Bryce’s play.    Has he sustained this level of play long enough to deserve an higher ranking? No. But for judging based in that stretch alone, he would. But whether he can perform more consistently at that level or build on that, and thus earns a higher ranking, remains to be seen.
    • Totally agree with you, if we had invested in drafting a corner or two I wouldn’t even ponder adding Ramsey. But, to be honest we legit added nobody to our corner room this offseason we have nobody worth developing. Even if Chau Smith Wade is better then what I think, he is the only guy we have invested draft capital into outside of our starters.
    • Look at his snap counts, your telling me that his entire college and pro football career every coach he has had has misused him? No offense but I don’t think you understand the role of a slot corner. Mike Jackson is the literal definition of an outside zone corner, he would be totally inept as a slot corner. Ala why he has been an outside corner his entire career.
