Panthers should consider trading Vernon Butler

At this point where we drafted him is completely irrelevant.  He is our player.  I mean, yea, he was a first round pick.  At the absolute ass end of the round.  Were there other players who might be more appropriate now?  Perhaps, but you have to look in the moment we drafted him to decide that.  And as others have pointed out, in that moment keeping KK was not a given.

Now, trading him doesn't get us anything.  Consider . . .

What would you give for Chris Baker?  Malcolm Brown?  Danny Shelton?  Tyeler Davison?  These are players making the same sort of money as Butler.

What would you give for Beau Allen?  David Irving?  Willie Henry?  Earl Mitchell?  These are players who graded out around the same as Butler.  All but one make more than Butler.

Money wise, the league average spend for a DT is 2.5 million.  Butler is less than that.  If you consider Butler an average DT (and that's how he graded out), you're getting a deal.  He's costing us a whopping 1.3% of our cap.

Our DT rotation looks great tbh.  Love backs up Poe, Butler backs up Short.  We probably need a youngster or two either in draft or a UDFA.

This is a bad idea

Vernon has shown flashes in his limited playing time. He's playing behind one of the best UT in the game.

You don't get rid of pass rushers for cents on the dollar which would happen if we traded Butler right now. We would get horrible value for a talented rotational player that is still on his rookie contract.

Also god forbid KK gets hurt at any point.

Hurney 2.0 is drafting a stud safety to make up for years of stopgaps and abysmal play.

Mike Minter step aside. Hurndawg 2.0 about to draft this young franchise’s GOAT safety.

well....

Why are you defending him when he can't get on the field?

It’s Rivera lol. Is that a serious question?

Took Norwell an injury to get on the field.

Norman had to scratch and claw his way out of the dog house.

Who knows if Moton will ever see the field.

Etc

etc

Excellent response. This is an intelligent post.

Yep. Butler should've never been the pick, but since he was, we shouldn't have extended Short. We did both. Someone has to go. We can't have a first rounder coming from the bench for his whole career. Let him start somewhere else.

Except, Butler clearly isn't the player KK was.  In all honesty, you could've just stopped after "Butler should've never been the pick."  I really think the pick wasn't even so much bc of what Butler offered, but moreso bc Gettleman thought it would give him leverage in negotiating with KK, and then if he felt KK got too greedy, he would do him like Norman and then Butler would become insurance in a best case scenario.

I absolutely say trade him, but I doubt we'd have any takers...  He just doesn't have much value.

Nippleshorts drafted him in case he couldn't work out an extension for Short. Knowing Dave would cut anyone he didn't want to spend money on, it was a calculated decision at the time. When Short got PAID, Butler became a luxury item. Jury is out on his talent level, but the moves we have made since then has shown that we would have been better suited to draft a TE. Derrick Henry would have gotten the Artis-Payne treatment until J. Stew left. As Cam says, "hindsight is 50/50." I'd probably keep him for depth unless someone offers something great in return. Our luck we'd let him go, Short would get hurt, and Butler would become a stud for years to come.

So not true.

He doesn’t get on the field because kk is one of the best in the league. He’s entrenched there. He’s never been given a shot to have the full reps

He gets four days a week to earn playing time in some capacity. Coaches play d lineman all over the line, they're allowed to have them both on the line at the same time.
