@LinvilleGorge I enjoy your comments.

Aj Green and Dez Bryant have similiar career catch% as Torrey Smith.

Point being: Catch % isn't a way to judge whether or not Torrey Smith will do well in our system. The routes you run have a big impact on your catch %.

AJG has one season below 55%, Torrey Smith doesn't have a single season over 55%.  Dez is also terribly inefficient.

You've correctly identified the problem though.  Smith had those terrible %'s playing mainly a niche role.  We are going to ask him to do things he does even worse....  think about that....

Smith's strong suit is going deep. Deep balls also happen to be the lowest percentage of passes converted. I'm not going to try to argue that he has the best hands in the world, but certainly no worse than Ginn's who had some nice years for us. Yeah, some maddeningly frustrating drops too, but that's why these guys are available at their price points. If guys like Ginn and Smith had Larry Fitzgerald type hands they'd be pulling in $10M+ per season.

I think Short is one of those guys who you don't touch if only due to age. He'll turn 30 this season. And we'd be pushing guaranteed money down the road until he was 33 years old. That feels dangerous to me.

Didn't realize that Short was that old-thnx.

He was 24 when he was drafted. Likely played a role in why he was available in the 2nd round. DTs with 6, 6.5, and 7 sacks in their final three college seasons in a power conference are usually slam dunks for the 1st round.

Is there anyone that the Saints AREN'T trying to sign?

They get like this every time they feel they are close.  It's exciting and looks good in the short run, but it requires all of those big contracts to pan out otherwise they put themselves out of contention for a good 5 years or so.  It also provides them with only a short window, so it's basically do or die.

Yep.

Last year's draft definitely gives them some flexibility but we've seen this movie before. It didn't end like anyone expected it to.

But but but cap room!

Anybody can free up money, it's just a matter of whether or not you are willing to sell out the future in favor of the present.  The Saints are going all in to try and cash in on Brees' final years.  They know there will be a transition period when he hangs them up, so they are willing to sacrifice the cap after he leaves.  Expect them to be good for about two more years, then they will drop down again.  And when they get decent again, they'll go all in once more.  It's how they operate.
