Carolina Panthers Have *Serious* Interest In S Tyrann Mathieu

If Breeland's proposed 2018 cap hit was 9.5 million, Panthers can definitely afford Mathieu.

The top 2018 cap hits for Free Safety's are as below and Mathieu will fall somewhere close to the top which is around the money that was going to a less player in Breeland.

Besides, it came out his mouth :

""It's not all about money for me," said Mathieu, ranked No. 5 in NFL.com's Top 101 Free Agents of 2018. "I want to go somewhere where I can be completely immersed in football, and it's not too much about anything but winning. I want to be a part of winning culture, where you feel that all the time. That's all I want."

Luke, TD, Pep, Short, Bradbery need to get their recruiting on.

Here is a really interesting contract projection from a guy on reddit.  Basically, if you're not interested in number break down, floor of his contract would be 10 mil a year (as he said, most likely in a 1 year prove it contract) where as the ceiling would be about 13.5 mil a year.  His contract projection says 3 years, 37.5 mil, 12.5 mil per year, 20mil guaranteed, 12 fully.  I didn't think with the Breeland contract that it was possible, but now with that money back available, I really think Honey Badger is a real option.

I thought I saw that his contract was structured to be around $4M cap hit in 2018.

That was 2017.

His cap hit for 2018 was scheduled for 9.3 million.

9.3 million is less than the 9.5 offered to Breeland but that is just the signing bonus and doesn't account for the actual salary and other bonuses.

I'd rather have a cornerback. Maybe trade for one.

I scoffed at the idea of trading Butler this morning when it was brought up... but now it might be looking into. Find a DB still on a rookie deal and swap.

I like your plan in the other thread..

Sign 2 safeties and Ebron then 1st round CB.. Good plan in a deep CB draft..  Badger, and Vaccaro..

No, I do also remember Breelands contract being ridiculously friendly to us in 2018 ... Like $4M and then escalating after that.

That would be the hitch in signing Honey Badger....I doubt he signs for that little this year. I want him here really bad now, esp with the hole at CB2, but Vreeland's 2018 number is way less than what Mathieu wants, IMO

Just something. I went from really hoping the Panthers secondary was turning around to complete dread.

Breeland's cap hit for 2018 was 3M and some change.

I still think it's possible...  also still waiting on us to cut Russell Shepard.

    • Tetairoa McMillan.   The last 28 1st overall picks were either a QB, DE, or OT. Seeing as I don't think we'd take an OT in the 1st and give up on Ickey as an LT yet and there doesn't seem to be a clear overall #1 type of QB or DE pick this year, it very well could be a non conventional #1 overall this year, at least in regards from the last almost 3 decades of drafts. If we didn't have Horn, I'd be more open to Hunter as a CB at #1, but we have him so another CB wouldn't be how I'd use a #1 pick.  And as much as I love Legette, if we have SB contending aspirations, I don't think Legette is a #1 on a team like that, but he damn sure is an elite #2 on a team like that.  He's more of the Smith/Higgins/Waddle to Brown/Chase/Hill (in terms of role/impact, not style of play of course). T-Mac is going to be the top ranked WR on every team's board in the end.  He is going to be a true outside #1 WR who is viewed as a consensus Top 5 WR in the game by his second contract in the same way guys like Jefferson and Chase have done.  His height combined with his speed, athleticism, and hands are near impossible to find all in one player, there is a reason his generally used comp is Mike Evans (although as he's not as thick, I personally see him more as an AJ Green). Yes, as an Arizona alum I've admitted to having bias towards the player to begin with.  But he's also someone very widely being put into the Top 5 in mock drafts lately and most of them have him as the first non QB offensive player being taken, so it's not really THAT much of a homer pick on my part anyways. If a QB or DE truly separate themselves as being a can't miss prospect come draft day, I'm open to that discussion, but until then, or if it doesn't happen, T-Mac is my pick 100 times out of 100.
