Carolina Panthers Have *Serious* Interest In S Tyrann Mathieu

I think every time a player makes some noble sounding comment about how they want to go to a winner or a strong culture or something like that, fans of all 32 teams say "hey, that sounds like us."

And yeah, a lot of them say that sort of thing only to turn around and sign with the highest bidder. Very few guys admit to being about the money. I remember one guy some years back, but for the most part they at least try to sound high minded.

The Panthers aren't the Browns or Bears or Jags even. As bad as people think home is, there are a lot worse football organizations out there aside from all the FO foolishness.

The Rivera/Cam era has done a lot to push the historical win percentage into respectability. This defense has been one of the very best in the league for quite some time now. We are in this teams golden ages at this very moment. When has this team ever had so many legit superstars? 4 recent division championships an NFC championship a 15-1 season, a recent Super Bowl the second in a relatively short franchise history?!? That's winning.

There is nothing wrong with believing that they'll finally bust that door down, they've been trending in that direction.

Unfortunately, comparing ourselves to teams like the Browns is all we have Panthers are bottom half of NFL in W/L since 1995. And they worked to get there from being in bottom 1/3 just a few years ago. Winning culture to me sounds like Steelers, Pats...perennial contenders. But like Scott said money probably talks louder.

I get that, but at the same time we're not the Patriots or the Steelers either.

One criticism I've heard of Panther fans that I have to admit has some validity:  We have a tendency to believe that the rest of the world holds our franchise in a lot higher regard than they actually do.

I think this is likely the case for pretty much every fan base.

Agreed, but teams with multiple Super Bowl wins actually have something they can be proud of. Heck, even teams with one or two can at least point to that.

Right now we're basically still Anna Kournikova. We might look good but we haven't really accomplished anything.

More often than not it doesn't really matter in FA anyway. The highest bidder usually wins. There are always some exceptions, especially for aging vets who've made plenty of money and are trying to chase a ring.

Money talks; especially in football where the money isn't 100% guaranteed and you can be out of the league in the blink of an eye.

That being said, Ownership being in flux is not attractive to potential FAs if you are trying to get guys to take less than somewhere else.

    • I mean that’s not an argument I go with… But in ACC play, both Clemson and SMU covered the spread more than Miami.  Miami didn’t cover in 3 games.
