Kind of ironic. We get Matt Kalil and...

top dawg

he’s a player that could retire at any moment and if he decided to hang it up this year, or he fell off a cliff, you’re looking at almost 6 million in dead money

If he retired, the Rams could go after him for the unpaid bonus money and it would no longer impact their salary cap.

Paying Whitworth more to be barely better than Kalil statistically and then paying Solder even more to be arguably just as bad as Kalil doesn't seem too great.

I guess 'barely' is subjective. Both rankings I saw had Whitworth 4th and one had Kalil 32nd (the other poll didn't go that far down).

ANDREW WHITWORTH

NOT FOR A STOPGAP ONE YEAR DEAL

Sorry, had to yell back

I loved Wentworth too, but he was very old and I guess we were afraid to offer what was already out there for him

We’re stuck with Speedbump McGee. It sucks, but it is what it is now. A lot of us said it was a bad contract then, and it’s still bad contract. I just hope he shows some improvement this year, but he hasn’t been very good in years now (it had been years since he was good before we gave him the contract, but still gave it to him).

He shouldn’t have gotten the contract he did.

I wanted Whitworth, but I understand why we went with Kalil. We were trying to find a long-term solution at LT and rolled the dice on the younger guy. It just doesn't look like it's going to work out. Unfortunately, he's looked to be what we feared he was.

Dude who had downright sucked for 4 straight years sucked for a 5th consecutive year. Shocker!

This logic that is used to try and justify the Kalil signing is dumb as hell. Whitworth signed a 3 yr deal, that’s not exactly just a stop gap.

“But but Kalil is only 28” let’s just throw performance right out the door and sign every young guy out there!

He signed a 3yr deal. There’s nothing “stopgap” about that

Even if he did just sign a one year deal, he was still the better option than signing Kalil to the contract we did.

Theres just no way to spin the Kalil thing, it was dumb as hell when it happened and it’s still one of the worst contracts one could ever hand out

If Matt Kalil had actually turned into a stud for us, you would be here using that to shout down anyone that dared say anything negative about DG.

Instead it was all actually Jerry Richardson's idea apparently. Nevermind the fact that Gettleman just threw 60 million at a 30 year old left tackle. Maybe JR was there somewhere whispering in his ear?

when did i say this?

You can think the logic is dumb, but I'd bet good money that played a big role in the decision. We were trying to find a long-term solution at LT.

If we had offered him less, he would be playing somewhere else.  Maybe that is good maybe not.  Look at what Solder got.

QB

DE/OT

Are the the top 3 money making spots on a team.

Yes, but I was replying to the OP who said just sign a one year stopgap guy and I asked who.

Then everyone gives me 3 yr contract guys

You've already forgotten about the screams that meddling Jerry Richardson fired Gettleman because Thomas Davis and Greg Olsen ran to JR and told him that Gettleman was mean to them? This was paired with the argument that JR instructed DG to sign Matt Kalil because of his brother Ryan and "family atmosphere".

Heck, I never even considered JR pushing to sign Matt for "family" but makes sense
