Anybody can start a CB on a rookie contract and watch him get burned like toast.

When has the market for a veteran CB ever been particularly cheap? Maybe we should have called up Cason to see what he's doing.

Im one the biggest DG apologists on here but starting two rookie CBs was about one of the dumbest decisions in franchise history

So rookie Worley is basically on par with big contract Breeland who has had years to develop.

Its pretty confusing being a panther fan in the offseason.

before everyone bows down to this move... remember the division we are in.. the path to the playoffs = covering Mike Evans, Sanu, Michael Thomas, Julio Jones.

CB Bashaud Breeland, Panthers

Grade: B+

The highlight of Breeland's career is still that Monday Night Football game against the Cowboys in 2014, when the then-rookie cornerback matched up against prime Dez Bryant and held him to three catches and 30 yards (with a touchdown, admittedly) on seven targets.

It looked like Breeland might blossom into a top-tier cornerback, especially after Washington made his life easier by signing Josh Norman before the 2016 season, but he never really seemed to take that next step on a more consistent basis. By the end of his final year in Washington, he was comfortably the team's third-best cornerback behind Norman and Kendall Fuller, who is now in Kansas City.

The talent is certainly there with Breeland, and he certainly has a reputation of being dedicated to the game of football, but it seemed by the end of his time in Washington that a change of scenery might suit all parties involved. The Panthers had a hole at cornerback after trading away Daryl Worley, and Breeland won't be expected to serve as the No. 1 guy with James Bradberry on the opposite side of the field. For a guy who just turned 26 and has started 57 NFL games, the Panthers have to be happy they only needed to guarantee Breeland $11 million as part of a three-year, $24 million pact.

Question:

Is Breeland and Smith enough of an upgrade over Worley and Shepard to warrant $11M of the cap this year? I'm legit curious because I don't know much about Breeland or Torrey Smith.

What is Breelands cap number? Until we know that, we don't know what the cap differential was. Most year 1 contracts have lower cap hits given the signing bonus serves as the first year salary and is prorated. Plus Shepard is still on the Panthers for now..
