I was only referring to our coaching staff

Gotcha.

Actually I'm incorrect on one front. DG brought in Horton, Addison was before Gettleman took over.

DG was clearly quite good at finding and acquiring talent in the middle of the defense, but to say he left us in a hole at DE would be putting it kindly. Salt in the wound is seeing how nicely teams like the Jags and Eagles have built their defenses without overly emphasizing the middle. They are dynamic.

Do you know what position Fletcher Cox or Malik Jackson play? The Eagles and Jags are paying a combined $30M per year for them. Acting like they ignore DT is funny. Cox is the best defensive player on the Eagles.

I don't think you're trying to actually comprehend the posts. Nowhere did I say we or other teams shouldn't or don't invest in the middle of the defense. It was about not overly investing. We had Short, and Star already, and drafted Butler as insurance. The problem is we proceeded to throw top dollar at KK while using a first rounder on a position of strength. Butler is a serious luxury pick, and by the time we finally get to see what we have in him his rookie contract will just about be up.

Our DE play has been well above average overall since 2013. Can't say the same about secondary but DE hasn't been a problem any single year until possibly this season if Pep doesn't return. No we haven't had any young stud franchise pass rushers (Addy is close) but you don't need that to have success at the position, and frankly very few 4-3 teams even have one. I, more than anyone here, would love to have an elite franchise DE who can do it all (like Hardy was in '13 and we hoped he could be going forward) but I can't complain about not having one considering how steady we've been at the position and how damn hard they are to find. I think DG whiffed badly on McC over Barnett though. Barnett will be a perennial pro bowler/all pro before long.

Star is gone and we have Butler now for another 3 years cheap. It makes perfect sense to think forward like that and take a DT there. You can argue that Butler isn't very good and that the pick was bad for that reason, and pending the results of this season I may agree. But the act of taking a DT there in general really wasn't an issue.

36 tackles and 14 sacks in 5 years isn't exactly what I would call lighting it up at DE.

Well he's been steadily improving in a limited role, similar to Mario. And he's already among the best 4-3 DE in stopping the run. 5.5 sacks this year is pretty solid as well and a ton of strips. What more could you possibly expect from a UDFA?

I have to imagine the team has a pretty good idea of what to expect at this point. At least they should.

I thought the timing of his surgery was a pretty clear signal. He's 38 so the Panthers should be thinking about life after him anyways, but I think he's coming back and as long as we know before the draft it's fine... we don't have the cap to go chasing a pass rusher in FA this year anyways.

No he has not been " steadily improving "  - last season was his best for sacks but 2014 was probably his best statistically.  His role is limited because he isn't a great player - nothing against him, just don't try to polish gettlemans resume by his pick up of  Horton is all I am saying.

So thats the back story...please share

To make it really general, Peppers wanted out of Carolina. Most likely because JR was shitting on the team, but for whatever reasons. Hurney said to bad and tagged him. Twice, I believe, basically forcing him to stay here. Peppers lost motivation and got a rep for slacking off during games. Which he did. He basically stopped playing to the point Beason called him out and created an issue between players on the field. Fans were mad because trade offers for Peppers came in, nice offers but instead, in classic Panthers fashion, the FO let a great player walk, which was inevitably going to happen and get nothing in return.  Similar to the Kalil situation going on RIGHT NOW. Could save money but would rather wait until it's to late to let players go. Plenty examples in the past show the Panthers do not know how to let go early and get something in return. But that's another story.

That was a losing season, the team was awful.

I figure he waited to see what other moves we are making before deciding if the Panthers are serious about winning and returning to the Superbowl.

So should we be hopeful that since he is signing on for another year that he thinks we are a super Bowl contender this year?
