Here's the stats. Kalil vs. Larsen...

Passing yards per game: 167 with Kalil, 206 with Larsen

Rushing yards per game: 128 with Kalil, 131 with Larsen

Total offensive yards per game:  303 with Kalil, 336 with Larsen

Points per game: 20ppg with Kalil, 24.3ppg with Larsen

1st downs per game: 20 with Kalil, 20 with Larsen

Sacks per game: 2 with Kalil, 2.3 with Larsen (though it's worth noting that the two worst sack games with Larsen were his 1st two starts and we averaged 1.6 per game in his final 8 starts)

Win/Loss record: 4-2 with Kalil, 7-3 with Larsen

Not only are we not significantly better with Kalil, we're actually significantly WORSE.

Great post! Liked the way you gave us stats and number to back up everything. I was under the impression we didn't play as well with Larsen, so this is very interesting. It is also the $10m question.

When I initially took a look, I was expecting to see that we were significantly better with Kalil. I was pretty surprised.

Honestly, when you look at it objectively, releasing Kalil is a no-brainer. The guy is injury prone and has missed a ton of games in the last two years and the offense has performed better with his replacement on the field. Now, all things being considered, I do think Kalil is the better center. If he was able to play all season long I think the offense would've performed better, but I honestly have nothing to back that up. What we do know is that recent history says that he'll likely miss a significant chunk of games making his cap hit even more significant and causing a lack of continuity along the OL.

Usually I agree with Jeremy

not this time

that vaunted offensive line with Norwell.  with Kalil are terrible running the ball taking away Newton’s running

Kalil has been non existent the past two years and odds are by game 5 he will be again, then what

if he is kept, it should be at a substantial pay cut

meanwhile other teams get better and here sits the Panthers.

I was in the camp of "Well if we don't sign any FAs than why not just give him the last year and hope he's healthy."

Now, I say cut him even if we don't bring in any FAs. Imagine having a $10m rollover into next year when we don't have to worry about Comp picks and have a ton of cap to spend.

I think the only high priced guys we need to sign next year will be Funchess and D.Williams so we will have a ton of money during next years FA period IF we make the hard decision this year.

@LinvilleGorge would comparing rushing numbers between 2 different starting centers be skewed a bit by Cam Newton rushing for almost 800 yards? Several games Newton was our leading rusher, when we couldn't establish the run (shocking) he picked up the slack and then some.

No, I looked at the numbers the other day. They were actually a little higher in the Kalil games.

Just crunched them including the playoff game. 46ypg rushing for Cam with Larsen, 47ypg with Kalil.

Lol...stats?  Hurney don't need no stinking stats!  He goes by his feels man.

Man this so funny I'm actually getting mad like come on Hurney make a dam tough decision. It's like the retirement statement basically secured him this last year ok kool but not at 10 M's.

Were you all paying attention last year? Anytime Ryan Kalil did not play it was like the Panthers didn't even have a left tackle in the game. Kalil is what made Matt Kalil look almost capable. Cut Ryan Kalil and you better be ready to cut Matt Kalil too because without his brother he is a huge liability.

This problem doesn't just disappear next year thus not a valid argument. We paid a LT money to preform and if he isn't, the Panthers need to address the LT not patch it by overpaying a C AND LT. You cut Kalil because it makes sense and statistically speaking for the Center position (not LT), there was little to no drop off.

Before we signed M Kalil at LT we should have made sure Ryan would play as long as Matt if we are relying on him to make Matt play well lol
