Every time I hear of one of our players signing somewhere else makes me hate Matt “speed bump”  Kalil even more

Good point.  Funny how people have spent almost a decade blaming Hurney for any and everything wrong with the team and how he hamstrung us due to his signings...  yet, here we are...  We have a decimated secondary, a decimated receiving corps, lost our starting all-pro G, starting DT, and yet, we're stuck paying Matt Kalil to be a turnstile at a ridiculous salary and we have minimal flexibility to upgrade at those other positions.  Hmm...  seems like someone overspent on poor investments, made some bad decisions, and left us little cap room to improve.  But, he is a walking genius though while Hurney is satan.

And we aren't 15 million over the cap like when he inherited it.

In fact we are ~15 million under even after we gave our mediocre kicker the 2nd highest kicker contract in the league.

We have the ability to save 10 million by cutting kalil, but we won't.

We have the ability to save 2 million by cutting shepard but we're holding off on it.

We just let our all-pro guard walk (who gettleman signed as a UDFA) because we're already paying an all pro guard (who gettleman drafted), and we'll need to pay our 2nd team all pro tackle (who gettleman drafted) next year. We also have a decent prospect that could fill in at LG in Moton/ experience with Larsen so that's nice too.

We have Butler and Love who are more than serviceable at this point and are in a position to step in for Star who is not worth 10 mil a year (in my opinion).

We have Young receivers with potential in funchess and samuel, a young RB in CMC, and a young CB with potential in Bradberry. We'll see how those go, but hopefully they pan out. I will agree we need more help in the secondary and another proven WR, and would also like another DE, but the team just made the playoffs 4 of the last 5 years with gettleman as GM and Hurney left us with 3 playoff appearances in 11.

The two situations aren't even comparable man.

Who drafted Amini Silatolu over Cordy Glenn?

We could have had a quality left tackle for way cheaper than Kalil.

That's not really fair because you don't know what you were truly getting. Some folks just don't pan out on the NFL level. Now the fact that he keeps getting back on the roster? THAT is a travesty in itself because we bought the hype :crying:.

Pick No.40

Selected By: Carolina Panthers

Round: 2

Pick (Overall): 8 (40)

Pick Analysis: Silatolu is a large, athletic interior lineman who has the ability to smother his opponents and consistently sustain miss his blocks through the end of plays. Coming from a small school like Midwestern State and facing little competition, he will have an adjustment period far greater than that he will never get over that like other linemen as he enters the league. A team likely will want to move him from his college position of tackle to guard then realize they made a mistake and cut him only to bring him back knowing he sucks, where he can use his non-athletic ability to get up field pancaked more often in the run game. Silatolu's greatest worst attribute is his footwork, as he is quick off the line of scrimmage and an active puller who can get outside blows right by his assigned defender like a turnstile, move upfield and locate his blocks to quickly engage miss. He does not have great leverage or explosiveness in his play but possesses many little to no strong assets for an interior lineman, giving him early second-round value to a team sucker with the patience to develop him into a starter.

IJS lmao!!!

But it wasn't one player.  Look at all the great players he cut that we have spent years since trying to replace.  Again, we won with the core Hurney built.  How do we know Hunrey wouldn't have won once Cam and Luke were in place and he built around them like Gettleman got to?  I'm not glorifying Hurney, I'm just saying Gettleman gets way too much credit and not enough blame and vice versa for Hurney.  Also, if it was you, who would you have extended - Tuner or Norwell?  I can't ever recall Norwell struggling once, so he would have been my choice.  Turner is ok, but he is not worth what he was paid, so when comparing the two, it appears Gettleman settled on the lesser of the two.  Again, it wasn't one player.

matt kalil has the 10th highest average per year in the league among LTs.  going off memory but i think i saw someone on this board post that he has the 20th highest cap figure for LTs going into 2018 but i'm not sure.  even guys at his position that suck get paid, it's what the market dictates.

i know "herp gettlemoron overpaid for a trash LT so now we can't sign anybody" sounds good and all but matt kalil has the 9th highest cap figure on the panthers right now.  thomas davis and ryan kalil are both ahead of him.

turner is a 3x pro bowler and would have probably been the top paid G on the market had he walked.  and you, i, and everybody reading this thread knows the huddle would have pitched an absolute poo fit if gettleman had just let him go.  it's easy to say this stuff in retrospect but at the time that extension was done turner was our second best lineman behind kalil, and arguably more important because he was younger and playing at an elite level then.   norwell was a good, up and coming guard at that point but he didn't have the same argument.  this is a pure hindsight argument.
