New #DeepThreat Torrey Smith With Only 6 Catches Past 15 Yards In 2017

Lol I won’t argue anymore. If you guys think this is the help we need I won’t say no more.

Who is saying he's a number one? Nobody, not his job. What he is is a valuable piece, at a reasonable cost. They can do all sots of things with his money if they need room, convert some of his salary to bonus & reduce his cap hit this year, extend him for a year of two, reduce his cap hit that way.

Last 3 years he's been catching passes from the likes of Kaep, Gabbert, Foles &  Wentz. Cam will be the best QB w/ the best arm throwing to him since Flacco.

He'll be in Turner's offense, which has always needed WRs who can stretch the field.

Last 3 years, he's been a one trick pony who hasn't been asked to do his trick much. Turner loves that trick. Cam loves that trick. Wasn't anybody able to do that trick last year and it hurt the panthers.

Looks to me that Smith is in the exact situation that Ginn  was in before Ginn signed with the panthers. Not saying that Smith WILL duplicate Ginn's success here, do think there's certainly reason to hope for that as a panthers fan. If Smith gives you 40/600/4, that's worth 5 mil.

Then, there's the fact that a trade doesn't count against possible comp picks for next year; there's no guaranteed salary; that he stepped his game up in the playoffs; that he's a solid locker room presence; that 4900 yards and 39 TD may not be HOF numbers, but  those are top 25 [TD] and top 35 [yards] numbers among active players. Looks like a reasonable trade to me.

I think I will reserve judgement until he plays a game, but he is not another Russell Shepard. Shepard hadn’t really done a thing to deserve snaps. Torrey has played well. Until Byrd and Samuel show they can be healthy for a season, I don’t think they deserve guaranteed snaps over a veteran who has had succes and has managed to stay on the field. IMO.

an unproved rookie is on the way!

What's your point?

An unproven rookie only has to surpass a gaudy statline of 200 yards and 1 touchdown to be considerably better than Russell Shepard, and at a fraction of the cost.

Also to note, Hurney could easily approach Torrey at any point about lowering his contract, and actually guaranteeing part of it.

Yep.  Can easily create 2 million in cap space by a simple restructure.

Convert his 2018 salary into a 1 million base, and convert the remaining 4 million into bonus, spreading the hit over two years.  Boom!  just added 2 million in cap space this year.

Probably don't want to do it unless we need it because it does push 2 million into 2019, but if we have a specific target, it does free up some cash to help fill a hole.

Make a large bid on Watkins. Get rid of Torrey and fire at Watkins in the 10-12 million range tbh.

Heck, I’m even okay with going low and grabbing Mike Wallace, Donte Moncrief, or Albert Wilson at this rate.

25. Sammy Watkins, Los Angeles Rams

Route Running: 19/30
Hands: 16/25
YAC: 12/20
Blocking: 13/15
Position Value: 8/10
Overall Grade: 68/100

Despite playing in the highest-scoring offense in the NFL this season, Watkins wasn't the same explosive playmaker we've seen in the past. He finished with 593 receiving yards and only 39 receptions despite playing 15 games. The 24-year-old exceeded 90 receiving yards just once this year, but he scored eight times as he was the Rams' best red-zone option. He's an elite blocker and has the talent to become a much better player then we saw in the past two seasons, but it's fair to wonder if the lower-body injuries are taking their toll.

I'm bumping these threads mid season when cam is throwing bombs to smith

That would be a good thing we are all Panthers fans and want the team to Win.  People who bump threads to say i told you so care about being right and winning the internet

Lol. At this point it’s the same people who actually want to contradict what they’ve been saying in the past and go against my viewpoint.

”We need to give Cam receivers not Russell Shepards”

*Marty gets a scrub who’s 29 and on the decline and lets him be our highest paid WR*

“This Russell Shepard the goat now”

I get that it’s fun to counter anything I type, but I really don’t get why people are defending this move, and normally I’m the more optimistic guy.

I don’t see it in Torrey. I just don’t.

You acted like Russell Shepard was the best ever. Now you act like Torrey Smith is the worst ever.  Why can't  you call something for what it is for once.

Zero people think Smith is the answer to our prayers. But most people,  except you and a few whiners,  think that he can be at least an adequate ancillary piece to keep defenses honest (and that's even if he makes the final roster).

You've sung the praises of Samuel and Byrd,  and you know that we've talked to no less than four receivers,  even perhaps the most pro-ready one in Moore,  so I just don't see going on and on about Smith.  It's an average move that can turn out above average if Norv exploits his strengths, and he's certainly better than Shepard who is our second highest paid receiver (since you like being facetious).

First of all, I just want to get this out of the way and say this isn’t like something that’ll kill us. Yes, it’s only 5 million and it’s very easy to cut him anyways and get that 5 million back and just use Smith as an insurance policy (which we should).

However, this is by no means addressing the WR position. We need someone better, and I hope we get that guy. Torrey Smith is not the answer no matter how you look at it, and is not the veteran or guy we need.

And of course, our highest paid WR is one of the worst in the NFL according to NFL1000, landing himself in the bottom 10 of the list.

99. Torrey Smith, Philadelphia Eagles

Route Running: 11/30
Hands: 9/25
YAC: 12/20
Blocking: 7/15
Position Value: 8/10
Overall Grade: 47/100

While Alshon Jeffery's signing was a major hit in Philadelphia, Smith's was a flop. He played a ton but accumulated 430 yards and two touchdowns. The 28-year-old, who was known for his ability to make downfield plays throughout his career, caught six passes that went further than 15 yards this season. Smith struggled with drops, and his blocking in the run game was pitiful at times. He might be one-and-done with the Eagles.

______

Don’t try and kid that we got our WR to help Cam. We can do better than this.

You miss the point...he is an upgrade and I think he easily surpasses the performances of the last 2 seasons in our Offense...

2014..Ted Ginn’s longest reception was 27 yards.

To act like Torrey has never produced in his career is asinine. He helped Baltimore get over the slump in 2012.

I get he’s older but he has speed which our offense lacks tremendously.

And he’s 28.

Let's all hope Hurney doesn't start doing that again because that's how he fugered our cap to begin with.
