Yes, Watkins will get more than 5. Now I could go on about how setting the market influences other players but it may sail right over your head.

setting the market influences affects other players? what an abstract concept ! surely something I would never understand !

Another good point that the average fan doesn't understand...  part of the reason the Patriots always trade for so many players

This only true because the Eagles carried a club option on Smith for next season, so a release would have made him a qualifying free agent when it comes to compensatory picks.

Smith:

My analysis of this trade is that Smith is our no risk try for a Ginn replacement or even upgrade. One takeaway is that Hurney didn’t value Worley at all and he was at risk of just getting cut. Smith has better hands than Ginn (though he’s far from a Larry Fitzgerald) and has throughout his career been a more consistent and more well rounded receiver — though both are mainly pure deep threats. Also note how healthy Smith has been, which is nice to see after Byrd and Samuel last year. Basically we made this move to guarantee us a look at Smith with Cam and if they can develop chemistry similar to Cam and Ginn then we’ll keep him and he’d be well worth the $5M. Otherwise we cut him and there’s no real loss considering Worley wasn’t valued anyways. I’m one of Hurney’s biggest critics here and one of DG’s biggest supporters but I’ll give this move a chance. Could be a home run if Smith and Cam get on the same page early. Exact type of WR we needed the most.

Nice analysis.  His contract is not guaranteed, which means he was about to lose it all anyway.  Smith will probably take a more secured deal at a lower rate.  I like this trade.

I think we still probably draft a WR late, but not a necessity.

Smith was going to be a cap casualty anyway. he was going to get cut

WTF is your point?  We got him cheap and didn't have to out bid for him.  Just assuming he would come here is retarded.  Stop it.

in 2012 ted ginn had 1 yard. in 2013, with cam newton, his yards increased by 556 times that. by my calculations, torrey smith will gain roughly 239,080 yards in this offense

Math is hard

Watkins will get more like 12-14 million not 5.

Where do you guys make this stuff up at?

Torrey just caught clutch balls in the Super Bowl and playoffs from a quarterback he never played with,... that was obviously better at getting him the ball then Wentz.

Who doesn’t want a clutch Super Bowl receiver? Torrey would have gotten 7-9 million or more on the open market.

DUDEEEE, 12-14 million is elite WR money. No one is going to give that much to a 600 yard/8 td receiver who also problems has staying healthy? Where the fug are you making this stuff up at? Seriously.

Torrey 7-9 million? Superbowl clutch receiver? Ealy should be looking at a 15M/year contract in that case

Watch and see and I promise I will bump this for you.

Sammy Watkins > Alshon Jeffrey, Dez Bryant, Davante Adams, and others.

so I disagree with you.

    • I don't know--they represent the entire body of players and this be determined, if it got to that point, by a vote of all veterans and rookies who are part of the union.  If the elite players are getting 50% of all cap increases, the non-elite players with shorter careers might want a bigger slice of the pie and vote accordingly.  To say that the Union would not go for it is not something I agree with--it would be the union that proposes it--based on a proposal and a majority vote.  If the veteran players vote for an equal distribution framework, then all 53 on a roster benefit from a cap increase that is applicable to the entire team.  Not sure how labor laws might be impacted...
    • Carter, Graham, or Walker and I might roll the dice hoping Walker is around later.  If Hunter is there at 8, we are about to get a really nice haul for trading back.
    • Oh well. That's his fault if he wants to eat up all the cap space and have no protection as a result. A big part of why Brady has all those rings is that he generally took team friendly deals. Not that he wasn't making a mega ass ton of money, but he wasn't leaving his team cap strapped due to his contract while Peyton Manning generally tried to negotiate for every dime he could get forcing the Colts to make tough decisions.
