2016 draft now one of our worst drafts ever

Very possible Bradberry and Vern turn out to be great players even as soon as this year. Too early to say about this draft class and Worley had and still has potential too. Hurney trading him away doesn’t change that. Wait until we have a large enough sample size before making dumb claims.

But to defend OP, it def wasn’t a home run draft by all means

Bradberry and Butler may still work out for us but yes, not pretty.  Don't forget, we gave up a 4th rounder in this draft to grab Worley so he technically counts for two picks.

I remember how weird everyone on this board felt after this draft in particular.  A collective WTF and a bunch of people convincing themselves it was an ok draft.  I agree with some of the "premature" sentiments but our strategy in this draft was f*cked.

Every draft pick out there has a 50% chance at sticking to a roster.  Hurney had that track record his first time around, except for in the first round when he was much better than average.  Initially, it looked like Gettleman was far better but over time his picks have shown that same 50% hit rate.

The 2014 draft looked amazing the year after it happened.  Benjamin, Ealy, Turner, Boston, and Benwikere all looked like future stars.  Now only Turner is still with the team.  In 2016 we thought Thompson might have been the only decent pick from the 2015 draft but that whole slate is still on the roster.  Not bad, huh?  I personally think the 2016 draft sucked because Gettleman clearly messed up the roster so he had to select for need, but he did a decent job in getting Butler and finding Bradberry.  I think both of them will be on the roster for years to come, which by definition makes them successful picks.

I also believe that the draft is where a GM acquires talent, but it's also up to the coaches to develop it.  In 2011 we got Cam and that's it.  But we also selected Terrell McClain and Sione Fua, who did nothing in Carolina but who both made NFL rosters for over five years, with McClain starting 12 games in 2016 and still playing.  For a team that needed DTs at the time, you would think we did ok with those two guys.  But they didn't develop under the coaching staff here.  Is that the GM's fault?  In that vein, we never developed a single WR after Smitty until we got rid of Richard Williamson and replaced him with Ricky Proehl.

This April we will get a pick that should be very good, based on Hurney's historical luck in the first round.  After that, we'll get a collection of JAGs where maybe 2-3 of them will be on the team three years from now.  And that's how it is every year for every team.  And in 2020, if Butler and Bradberry are still on the roster and Worley is working out in Philly or wherever, intellectual honesty will have to say that Gettleman did a decent job in 2016 even if he did draft for need.

    • I complete disagree. Who is available is extremely relevant. If you have a couple of players you would be happy with and you can still get them if you trade back, you should do that in a heartbeat. Being afraid that people will lowball you next year is an odd stance. Then you just say no next year, problem solved. In this particular draft you can get a very good player at 46. But to each their own.
    • I don't think so.  Watson really screwed them up.  I see something happening, but do not know what.  Cousins could be had in a trade--but they liked Flacco when he played there.  If it were me, I would not spend the #2 pick on Sanders.  I would go after a tier 2 qb because I think Will Howard is going to start in the NFL soon, and I think Ewers was rated very high at the beginning of the year--he knows adversity and he beat out a Manning while taking Texas to 2 playoff appearances.  I am not good at picking QBs, but I think Howard's run pass option and his accuracy is going to help someone.  Stay in Ohio and play for the Browns behind Flacco--
    • After Cam at #1, there are three or four elite players and there could be a trade--If I am the Giants and I am needed a winning season badly and I have several needs, I might trade out and pick up mid first and an extra second rounder, including a QB--while nobody is going to move up to #3 for Sanders, they might for Carter or Hunter.  If the Giants then move back, Sanders could still be in play.  That could be the trade in the top 3.  New England wants Campbell and I get that; Jacksonville at #5 could move back if someone wants Graham or Jeanty.  But barring some trade, the top 4 are probably locked in. So it could be 2 hours into the draft before we get any surprises. Nice list, by the way--you nailed it.
