Panthers trade Worley for Torrey Smith

It's really not a mystery,  people.  Smith is a younger Ginn replacement that can still stretch the field.  And,  his salary is not guaranteed.

Here is comment from the PFT article about the trade.

I don’t pretend to know anything about Worley, but I suppose it’s good to get anything for Smith since they weren’t going to pick up his option anyway. But as Eagles fans, lets not pretend Torrey Smith didn’t help us this year. Yes he dropped some balls, but he also had his share of big plays down the stretch when it mattered. Everyone just assumes that they’ll just plug in Mack Hollins and not miss a beat. While they improved their cap situation, I’m not ready to say this makes them better as a team. There’s a reason Smith started ahead of Hollins this year. He was a great locker room guy & leader and he still has the speed to stretch the field. He’ll be missed.

Thank you Torrey Smith for coming up big for us when we needed it and helping us win our first Super Bowl! Best of luck in Carolina!

Depending on which site you use, Smith had somewhere between 4 and 7 dropped passes.  That means the rest of them were considered not catchable.

While 4 is not great and did lead his team, those are not Ted Ginn numbers.

A fact based appeal to reason?  Stop it!  Stop it now!

You just looked at his stats the last two seasons, didn't you?

Torrey Smith is a pure deep threat that has played the past two seasons in systems that don't emphasize the deep ball.

And stepped his game up in the playoffs. And is a great locker room guy. And has no guaranteed money. And the Panthers traded someone that was likely to be cut to get him. Looks like a great trade to me. actually a win win for both teams, Eagles get cap relief and a player that may develop, Panthers get a deep threat WR  and a veteran presence with little cap risk.

Moves like this are how teams get better. I realize Hurney has done some silly/stupid things in the past, but this looks like a sensible move to me.

Trade: Eagles deal WR Torrey Smith to Panthers for CB Daryl Worley

Grade for Eagles: A-
Grade for Panthers: C

It's difficult to believe that the Panthers sent an actual asset to the Eagles for Smith, given that Philadelphia was virtually guaranteed to decline the former Ravens star's $5 million option for 2018. Smith's impact was underrated by his final numbers (36 catches for 420 yards and two touchdowns) -- he got open downfield far more frequently than it seemed, but was let down by some subpar deep throws by Carson Wentz and Nick Foles. Smith also chipped in with a few drops, which didn't help matters.

The Panthers needed wideout help alongside Devin Funchess, but it's hard to figure that they were really bidding against other teams who wanted to assume Smith's contact for 2018 and trade an asset in the process. Smith probably would have struggled to get the two years and $10 million left on his deal as a free agent.

In lieu of possibly netting a compensatory pick for Smith, the Eagles instead take home another cheap cornerback in Worley, who started 25 games over his two seasons in Carolina. Worley hasn't developed as much as fellow 2016 draftee James Bradberry and fell into a rotation at times with Kevon Seymour, who should now have a clear path to a starting role. The Eagles want to spend money at just about every position besides running back and cornerback, and Worley gives them another low-cost option as they try to replace Patrick Robinson, who will likely leave in free agency this offseason.

I can hear JR's uncreative/retarded ass in the background now. In Hurney's ear: "We tried to copy the Steelers and that didn't work."
"Lets try to copy ourselves and get Ginn again instead of a fast but complete WR."

This franchise is great comedy.

Oh well that takes care of a solid #3WR...still need a 1 and at least it doesn't tie us down to some Hurney usual contract. If Worley turns into something I bet they'll be a line at the cliff though.

Well, somebody wanted a trade. There you go.

I like Smith, but now who replaces Worley?

Anyone can replace Whiffley. Now, we just need to take Badberry out of the starting ranks. Hurney is moving fast in rectifying all the garbage in Gettleman brought the Panthers to weigh down Hurney's core.

Dude just sound like a Panther. Seriously read this article and if you’re not a bigger fan afterwards idk what to tell you. He came in with Cam, has worked out with Cam, considers Steve Smith a big brother and really just wants to win. Heck of a pick up I can really see Ted Ginn with the Panthers numbers from him this year.

After reading his transcript, I don't know how anybody could not love this guy. It's players like Smith that make teams better. I honestly can't wait to see him play with cam and Company!
