Panthers trade Worley for Torrey Smith

Trading a potentially average CB for what I see as a #2 WR to pair with Funchess. It seems we've just shifted our needs elsewhere. Don't see Smith as the answer at WR that we need, but we desperately need something in the secondary now.

Not excited but will reserve judgement.

Funchess is a #2.   That remains a problem that never gets solved.

I don't mind adding Smith.

But who was the best CB we had at the end of last season? It sure wasn't Bradberry.   Now I am not advocating we should trade Bradberry but.....Worley was the best at the end.  For whatever that is worth.  Takes time to develop DBs.

I think your memory might be fuzzy. Worley was benched for a lot of the year. Gunter came in at the end, and made both of them look silly.

that is why I said at the end.

Bradberry got beat like a drum down the stretch.   Teams finally decided maybe we should throw at Bradberry and they had great success.

Mike Evans just got $16.5M per year and people think Torrey Smith wouldn't have got more than $5M on the open market.

Mike Evans is good, though.... what on earth does this have to do with Torrey Smith?

Here is why I think the trade happened instead of waiting for Free Agency. Smith has a contract for 5 million a year with no guarantees left...meaning no cap hit for cutting him. That is not something you would get if you signed him to a new contract. If he does not pan out this year, he can be cut and no harm no foul. The Eagles were going to cut him because they are over the cap, and had to free up that 5 mill.

It appears that the Panthers are planning on bringing in a veteran CB in Free Agency or possibly via trade, but more likely FA. Then you have the better of the young CBS in Bradberry, and a veteran on the other side.

You addressed the need for a veteran speedy receiver with Smith, who is cheaper than the available alternatives, and with basically the same stats. You also have the contractual benefits mentioned above.

So in reality, waiting for him to hit free agency would present more problems such as, he may not sign here any way, and that he would want more than 5 mill/year with no guarantees for 2 years.

Release Shepard, and you get half that money back, plus the 1 mill or so for Worley's contract, and you are basically coming out with a -1.5 million cap difference. And you can spend more of your cap on improving the defense by replacing Worley.

Not sure how you can see this as anything but a positive for the Panthers.

I don't see this as an anything for the Panthers just yet. That remains to be seen.

I'm not really sure why people are talking as if cutting him and not paying him anything would be some sort of a win though. Granted, he wouldn't done anything against the cap, but that would also mean we traded away a young player for basically nothing.

I mean at the end of the year he was still getting benched for Kevon, and both were taken off the field for Gunter.

torrey smith’s struggled to produce, but i guess that’s not on your radar right now

Nah, it’s on my radar. I’m cautiously optimistic.

I hope Matt Kalil was on your radar when we signed him at this point last year, as he failed to produce in a much longer time period.
