Panthers trade Worley for Torrey Smith

Personally, I always thought Worley was trash. He would look good with one pass breakup or a solid tackle, but he would give up so many easy completions. Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel like this fan base overrated him from day one.

double funchess lol

When did that happen?

For that matter, while I like him, I don't really think defensive coordinators are lying awake wondering how they're going to answer the threat of Torrey Smith right now.

Is everyone talking about a different Torrey Smith?

in the playoffs and Super Bowl the dude was CLUTCH! I only saw him drop one bomb over the shoulder but came back and caught the next one.

i think he’s a B+ receiver and for 4.5 million net was a great pick up.

Cam and Norv love the deep ball— Funchess is not that guy, Torrey is.

He's a D receiver who's only redeeming quality is that he can run fast.  He's Ted Ginn for 3 times the price.

I wouldn’t put much stock in what Smith did with the dumpster fire 49ers. He isn’t on the team to be a number one, he’s just here to be a vet, a quality guy, and someone who is athletic and can stretch the field. He’s been on two super bowl teams.

Funchess is our #1 and everything is being built around him. I’d keep that in mind. We weren’t really shopping for a #1, which A-rob and Watkins are gonna wanna be.

Also, we may have discovered that the market for Watkins and Arob will be too big for us to compete and we’re getting a for sure piece now instead of fighting others for scraps later.

Panthers acquire WR Torrey Smith from Eagles for CB Daryl Worley
If I were an NFL general manager, I'd be terrified to make any sort of deal with Howie Roseman. The man is a wizard and somehow finds a way to win every trade. He just robbed the Seahawks, so did he do the same thing to Carolina?

Torrey Smith is the bigger name in the trade, but that doesn't mean the Panthers are the winners. Smith was great for the Ravens during their Super Bowl run in 2013, catching 65 passes for 1,128 yards. However, Smith hasn't topped 770 yards in a season since, and at 29, time is running out for him to rebound. Smith wasn't very productive this past season, hauling in 36 balls for 430 yards and two touchdowns. He made some clutch plays, but also was responsible for countless drops. Owed $5 million in 2018, Smith had to be let go, as the Eagles are over the salary cap. The fact that Philadelphia got anything for him is definitely a bonus.

The Eagles won this trade. They dealt an aging, pedestrian player for a young cornerback with promise, all while saving $4 million or so in cap space. Worley, a 2016 third-round pick, had a semi-decent rookie year, but struggled in 2017. However, Worley has a chance to play better in Philadelphia because the Eagles, unlike the Panthers, have a great pass rush, so he won't be exposed as much. Plus, Worley is just 23, so he has plenty of room for growth.

Grade for Panthers - C+
Grade for Eagles - A-

It's funny, experts said the same thing about Panthers last season when we traded Kony Ealy to the Patriots.

Patriots and Eagles are geniuses and all that but if you recall, Ealy didn't even make it to final 53 cut last year.

not sure if it has been mentioned in this thread yet, but anyone else know what former Panthers receiver and guaranteed first ballot HOF is very good friends with one Torrey Smith? (hint: they share the same last name)

I won't argue that Smith is any different than Ginn.  Both guys are fast AF, but bad at football.  The problem is that we'll have to pay him $5 mil and we traded away a young promising player at a position we need more than WR.

He wasn't promising.

The idea that the Eagles GM is now a genius when he was the laughingstock and castrated fool under Chip Kelly a few years back is the funniest part...

Quick question on that front...

Which team won the Super Bowl last year?

(I've forgotten)

The problem is that Funchess isn't a #1 WR.

Gettleman's solution last year was to sign Russell Shepard, Charles Johnson, & Kaelin Clay, and then to draft Curtis Samuel who really didn't play exclusively at WR at Ohio State to address our questionable WR situation.  Unequivocally, that was not a success.

Hurney had the guts to trade KB mid-season knowing he would get killed nationally for it, and it did help our offense.

Torrey Smith has at least produced at a high-level, and I think could still be quite good in this offense.  I really think Hurney is making a good effort to improve our receivers while saving money to add elsewhere.

As big a hole as there is for another starting WR, there are more holes in the secondary.

torrey smith hasn’t produced a 1000 yard season in five years

and most of our problems with developing WRs/getting them to produce are more scheme related and philosophical than talent. it is about the Xs and Os, not the jimmies and joes. so any WR we can bring in will be a long shot to produce because our offense has consistently struggled with WRs getting YAC, and that’s where a lot of the production comes from. until the scheme changes you’re going to continue to see WRs struggle to be consistent.

that other part where you are talking about hurney being brave about trading KB well that doesn’t even make sense.

Walter football hates the Panthers....see the bolded part to understand the lack of knowledge....Form NFL.com team stats:

Panthers sacks 2017 - 50.0 which is 3rd in the league.

Eagles sacks 2017 - 38.0 which is tied for 15th.

And he gives the Eagles an A- for what he calls a mediocre CB, and the Panthers a C+ for a veteran receiver with speed. What a joke.

Walter is constantly drunk I'm almost 100% positive on that

My guess would be that the staff want happy with Worley, and Worley wasn't  happy with being benched for one. So it gave us a chance to get rid of Worley and get a vet position of need...

Possible, but then why not Darby?

Good drugs you are on or bad ones I should say,...

Torrey is awesome and clutch. Wentz didn’t have a deep ball like Foles and that’s why Torrey blew it up in he playoffs—

Cam has a nice deep ball— Torrey will catch 700-1000 yards for us and 7-9 touchdowns a year
