Panthers trade Worley for Torrey Smith

Here is why I think the trade happened instead of waiting for Free Agency. Smith has a contract for 5 million a year with no guarantees left...meaning no cap hit for cutting him. That is not something you would get if you signed him to a new contract. If he does not pan out this year, he can be cut and no harm no foul. The Eagles were going to cut him because they are over the cap, and had to free up that 5 mill.

It appears that the Panthers are planning on bringing in a veteran CB in Free Agency or possibly via trade, but more likely FA. Then you have the better of the young CBS in Bradberry, and a veteran on the other side.

You addressed the need for a veteran speedy receiver with Smith, who is cheaper than the available alternatives, and with basically the same stats. You also have the contractual benefits mentioned above.

So in reality, waiting for him to hit free agency would present more problems such as, he may not sign here any way, and that he would want more than 5 mill/year with no guarantees for 2 years.

Release Shepard, and you get half that money back, plus the 1 mill or so for Worley's contract, and you are basically coming out with a -1.5 million cap difference. And you can spend more of your cap on improving the defense by replacing Worley.

Not sure how you can see this as anything but a positive for the Panthers.

Probably because we are now out of the running for a big name WR and are again giving Cam garbage players to work with on offense.

Coleman played like an aging vet, and looked slow on the field. Plus, on a few occasions he was losing in jumpball situations; situations that you need your safety/center fielder to win at. I would assume that’s why most on here said that.

torrey smith’s struggled to produce, but i guess that’s not on your radar right now

No, but you want receivers who can turn bad passes into catches.  Any way you dice it up, he's an inefficient player and ALWAYS has been.

Key statistic is YPC

he isn’t going to be the #1 #2 #3 or even #4 target. But the times he does catch the ball is the 16+ yards average he has... that’s going to be nice.

i think it’s best as fans realize he isn’t coming to be a primary receiver. He will run deep and provide leadership.

His YPC was 11.9 last year.  Funchess was 13.3.

Walter football hates the Panthers....see the bolded part to understand the lack of knowledge....Form NFL.com team stats:

Panthers sacks 2017 - 50.0 which is 3rd in the league.

Eagles sacks 2017 - 38.0 which is tied for 15th.

And he gives the Eagles an A- for what he calls a mediocre CB, and the Panthers a C+ for a veteran receiver with speed. What a joke.

Yes they do, well it’s more of a Hurney hate. Read what they said about the Gano signing. They think Hurney is trash, but they loved most of the moves Dave pulled off and thought he was a great GM. I mean, Hurney could pull off a great trade and they still hate him. They ripped the KB trade which I thought was a great move.

Disagree...As of this moment without taking the draft into account (and assuming Shepard is cut)

Greg Olsen - good for 1000 yards when healthy

CMC - probably good for at least 70-90 catches next year

Funchess - should get more targets this year with KB gone for the full year

Smith - even if he only gets 50 catches for 600 yards, still an improvement

Samuel - Unknown but great potential

Byrd - See Samuel

Just those 6 show that there is not garbage surrounding Cam. You can call it homerism if you want, but blind negativity is not any better.

I would stop debating--Hurney made the trade, therefore its poo

Man, don’t be selective with his stats to help improve your pointless argument. Check his career. Not fair to judge a player for one year in a new system that he played a different role. You know what his route tree will be here. Don’t be dumb.

I think the Panthers are counting on Torrey Smith to start and/or at least play a lot of meaningful snaps.  Besides Funchess, we have a massive disappointment in Russell Shepard, "potential" in guys like Samuel & Byrd (who both haven't been able to stay healthy and/or endure NFL level hits), an old stand-by like Bersin, a returner in Kaelin Clay who shouldn't see the field as a regular WR, and our old standby scholarship guy in Bersin.

I am not discounting the potential in Samuel or Byrd, and CMC adds an element as a receiver too, but this is still not a group on paper that is going to keep opposing DC's up at night.

IMO Torrey Smith is the defacto starter across from Funchess unless/until someone else steps up

I would say Funchess would be unknown but great potential too. he had a good second half to this year and that's been it. We have the means to get another receiver. We're not done I can promise you that.
