I wouldn't rule another receiver addition out. If someone is still reachable a la Paul Richardson or even Mike Wallace, i think we pull the trigger. I don't think adding Smith is going to hurt that bad or at all. At most on paper it's still five million. If they restructure for more guaranteed money, then it helps more. Can Shepherd and we right back to 20 mil space.

This is what Im hoping for.

This, Thank you. But some of the Hurney nut huggers dont get this.

Hey you know who else was about to be cut?

Aquib Talib and Michael Bennett.

You know why they were traded for?

So they wouldn't hit the open market.

Wow. What a concept.

torrey was someone I wanted, caught clutch bombs in the playoffs and Super Bowl.

This! A vet (with apparently a great locker room presence) who has showed up in big games again and again, and has 2 SB rings. He'll produce, and be a great mentor. Kinda reminds me of the Cotchery signing, except we only gave him $5 million for 2 years.

So?  That's like saying a basketball player shoots 35% of the field and you're like "but what about the ones that almost went in?".

Apples to oranges here. Basketball is alot different than football and the two arent really comparable. You are comparing one player shooting a ball to a qb having to throw a catchable ball and then the WR also needing to catch it , with alot more players/factors into play.  Also this:

Depending on which site you use, Smith had somewhere between 4 and 7 dropped passes.  That means the rest of them were considered not catchable.

While 4 is not great and did lead his team, those are not Ted Ginn numbers.

If these players hit the open market, then they command what they want. I think if the player knew they were getting traded to Cleveland, that would be a problem. However these guys going to contenders, i don't think they complain. Smith would have commanded more if he hit the market. I just wish we'd roll the dice on Darby.

Here is why I think the trade happened instead of waiting for Free Agency. Smith has a contract for 5 million a year with no guarantees left...meaning no cap hit for cutting him. That is not something you would get if you signed him to a new contract. If he does not pan out this year, he can be cut and no harm no foul. The Eagles were going to cut him because they are over the cap, and had to free up that 5 mill.

It appears that the Panthers are planning on bringing in a veteran CB in Free Agency or possibly via trade, but more likely FA. Then you have the better of the young CBS in Bradberry, and a veteran on the other side.

You addressed the need for a veteran speedy receiver with Smith, who is cheaper than the available alternatives, and with basically the same stats. You also have the contractual benefits mentioned above.

So in reality, waiting for him to hit free agency would present more problems such as, he may not sign here any way, and that he would want more than 5 mill/year with no guarantees for 2 years.

Release Shepard, and you get half that money back, plus the 1 mill or so for Worley's contract, and you are basically coming out with a -1.5 million cap difference. And you can spend more of your cap on improving the defense by replacing Worley.

Not sure how you can see this as anything but a positive for the Panthers.

Nobody was going to pay Smith

coleman is the same age and ppl on here were proclaiming him an aging vet

Coleman played like an aging vet, and looked slow on the field. Plus, on a few occasions he was losing in jumpball situations; situations that you need your safety/center fielder to win at. I would assume that’s why most on here said that.

Not a good comparison - bc a shooter gets to select where he takes his shot. A receiver doesn’t get to choose when he catches the ball.

better comparison would be if someone goes up for an alley oop and misses the shot after catching the ball. But if it’s an errant pass or defended it doesn’t go against the recipient of the “oop.”

either way - can’t side with you. A bad pass never goes against the receiver.

No, but you want receivers who can turn bad passes into catches.  Any way you dice it up, he's an inefficient player and ALWAYS has been.
